jcd11235 0 #1 November 27, 2006 And what sites do you prefer? I'm using Azureus, which works well, but crashes often. The original Bittorrent software is more stable for me, but is very slow in comparison. And before the file sharing police jump my case, my primary purpose for file sharing is to get the music back that I have lost due to theft or CD rot. In either case, I've already paid for it, so I don't feel a bit guilty. OS X v.10.4Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! I'm fairly certain that it is my settings that is causing Azureous to crash on me, but I don't know which specific settings are to blame. Perhaps a better question might be "What did you just ask me?" Hint: I use a Mac because I am computer illiterate stupid. I've picked up a bit of knowledge here and there, but mostly I'm ignorant. When a file completes, I drag and drop it into my iTunes library and it works. Does that offer any information?Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! Carpediem 0 #9 November 27, 2006 I use Azureus on my macbook and i've never had it crash... wierd. The reason an album/movie is in 100 .rar files is because groups of supernerds "release" a new album or movie onto the internet. This is the reason they have fucked up names like (Movie.DVDRip.XViD-ALLiANCE). This release is downloaded off hacked servers across the globe. The entire file is broken into parts so that if the download fucks up, you only lose a small part, not the whole download. You piece these together with winRAR once you've downloaded them. These releases appear on torrent sites after they have been widely distributed already online. Most sites post them as once complete piece (or the 12 songs on the album), but not always. But like everyone else on here, I of course pay for all my music, movies, and software Those who do, can't explain. Those who don't, can't understand. I have a G3 900MHz, and I usually have several apps open and being used at any given time. My understanding is that a bittorrent file is already broken into small fragment, the site serves as a search engine, and the software, in this case Azureus, downloads all the pieces from various computers, and puts everything back together. The *.rar files sound similar, but it sounds like you have to do much of it yourself.Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! I have a G3 900MHz, and I usually have several apps open and being used at any given time. i could see it crashing then. I don't have an answer to this for you tho. Maybe one of the other techie's could chime in for ya? Quote So the *.rar files are essentially to full bittorrent files available on the sites as a manual transmission is to an automatic transmission, sort of? Yes, exactly. Manual is for those who know what they're doing and are looking for performance, auto for everyone else. QuoteMy understanding is that a bittorrent file is already broken into small fragment, the site serves as a search engine, and the software, in this case Azureus, downloads all the pieces from various computers, and puts everything back together. The *.rar files sound similar, but it sounds like you have to do much of it yourself. Bitorrent files being split into pieces is only how the file itself is transfered over the internet and downloaded, not how it appears to the computer user. To get a fast torrent download you want hundreds of people to be sharing the file. To get a fast *.rar download (that is NOT shared as a torrent), you only need 1 or 2 fast servers. This is the reason a release starts out as a .rar, and ends up on torrent sites. (If you download a torrent file in the .rar form, it's just because someone was too lazy to "winRAR" it and share it as 1 big file) I think you've got it pretty much figured out. Those who do, can't explain. Those who don't, can't understand.
