Ordering a New Container thinking of a Vector need opinions ASAP

Recommended Posts

Ok here is where I am. I am going to order a new container. I have a wings now I bought used and there is nothing wrong it is just green and black and since I ordered a new Sabre2 210 that is black and red I want a new container that matches the canopy and my jump suit to put it in.

I really like my wings and thought about ordering a second but the Sky Hook Option of the Vector has been on my mind for sometime now. I also like the Magnetic risers but I don't think they have them for my size container I would be ordering.

So what I am hoping is some opinions.
Here are my stats
6'2" 230lbs jumping a Sabre2 210 PD 193R Or possibly putting an R Max in this one. Money is not a concern as this will probably be the last rig I buy new for many many years and i want to do it right.

Everyone including manufactuers includinh Mr. Booth are welcome to comment/try to sell me on what they think is best. I am ordering a container monday and really want as much feedback to check against what I am already leaning towards..

Although I heard Bill say that many manufacturers picked up a licensing packet from him during the PIA Symposium, Sun Path and Aerodyne are the only manufacturers to my knowledge that have actually licensed the Skyhook. Sun Path's Javelin/Odyssey is the only H/C besides the V3 that actually offers the Skyhook as an option at this time. Aerodyne's Icon will be close behind:

Just so we don't hijack this thread, I resurrected the original thread on this subject from 2004 with an update, and a request that Bill keep us posted as other licensing agreements come to fruition. Let's use that thread for further discussion off the original topic of this thread.

I really like my Vector.

If it had the magnetic riser covers, it would be perfect.

I really like the handle option. (Webbing that is sewn on the backpad). When you are grabbing gear out of your car, it is so easy to use.

I think getting the skyhook is a "no-brainer" since it always can be disconnected.

With your weight, have you thought about Minirisers vs the wide ones? I am not going to say which one you should order, but I will say the two schools of arguments I have heard. Some say that larger folks need the thicker risers and 3 rings because of risk of failure.

Bill Booth, in this thread, http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1042892;search_string=riser%20break;#1042892 argues that having risers (or something above the 3 rings) intentionally being the weakest link in the harness system means that when a catastrophic hard opening occurs, riser failure will prevent the harness from failing elsewhere, and/or killing the jumper.

I guess, if you have any specific questions on the order form you should post the questions you are most wondering about...

Thanks everyone. As I said I really like my wings rig even though it was bought used and "off the shelf" it fits soo nice BUT since I am being "allowed"(see bonfire) to buy a new container I want to buy one that is not only going to be built for me but has the newest technology and I want to support Bill Booth whom IMO is constantly working and thinking how to keep us knuckleheads alive;)

I think I am just going to go ahead and order the Vector with the skyhook.

Thank for those who replied. Time to get working on the colors :)

Great choice on the Vector! They also have redesigned the inside of the yolk so there is no binding tape there, which makes it even more comfortable... With all the latest improvements (magnetic riser covers, spacer foam, skyhook, new yolk design, new cypres window location (they're going to put windows both in the back pad and keep the one under the reserve flat), new reserve rip cord design...) there are sure to be more and more folks switching to Vectors.

Have a Vector 3 M-series w/Skyhook for a year now, and love it. Have tested the skyhook with a spinning main cutaway, and it works as advertised. Wished it had the magnetic riser covers.

Only things to watch for if you're new to Vectors is main flap closure is reversed from many other rigs (Right then left). I do get the occasional packer who doesn't know and does it backwards. And read up on main closing loop length, and how the flaps should line up when it is the right length. I get packers (and the occasional rigger) trying to tell me it is too long.

..., new yolk design,

I know that spelling and grammar are optional here, but this just cracks me up. Did you think that the part of a rig that fits around your neck is enough like the center of an egg to share the same name ?

Good plan. I have a vector and love it. Every inch of that rig has good design. I was under the impression that magnetic riser covers are available for all sizes of vectors as well. You can even get them on tandem rigs. (sigmas)

yes. i had this same quandrie when i first started looking into the vector because on the website at the time it said something along the lines of " available on all micron sizes and up to 347". the good news: i ordered a 348 just last week, and my dealer said they do in fact now offer magnetic riser covers on larger models. the bad news: the estimated arrival time is june 29th. not sure how this compares with other brands, but its quite a wait none the less
we need to talk about your flare..
