What is appropriate dress for plays in NYC?

Recommended Posts

My daughter and I will be seeing The Rockettes, Rent and Stomp (her choices, not mine) when we go to NYC and my mom is telling me that we are going to have to get dressed up for that because "they're different in the big city". I really don't want to pack dressy clothes or wear a dress in the cold. We're southerners, it's cold to us when it goes below 60! So, are slacks appropriate? What about jeans?

Semi Formal, Dress, heels, day at the hairdooers. Not so much the whole day, but look at it as if you were going to attend a good friends wedding. Wait! I mean what "non skydivers" would wear to a good friends wedding.:)
Then, take lots of pics - pick the best 2 and post them.

These days, I think anything goes, especially if it's a matinee. I'd defer to the locals on whether jeans are okay, but you definitely don't have to go as far as bringing a dress. I'm sure a nice pair of pants and a sweater will be perfectly appropriate.

And ... all of those choices are great! I've seen the latter two and they are a blast, and of course the Rockettes are a tradition! You guys are going to have so much fun - some of my best teenage memories are of weekend trips to New York with my mom.:)

I'll blend right in! :P:ph34r:

Are you going to be in Manhattan? Location matters too.

I'm assuming Radio City MH.

I saw the rockettes two years ago with my mom - matinee, 2 o'clock show. I wear jeans and a nice sweater.

I think the standard is matinee - casual, not dumpy.
Evening show - Business casual to Dressy.

Don't bother packing nice clothes - those shows, no matter what time of day will have people in various states of dress anyway :P

You are going to see plays in the big city with your daughter for her bday! Dress up will you!!!!!!

But its not anything close to semi formal. Semu dressy is more like it. I wouldnt wear jeans, especially close to xmas.

The one time I went to a broadway play I wore reasonably casual attire, of course that was back in like 1990-1991 and I was in Highschool. I also went to Cats instead of Les Miserables' (I don't know what I was thinking... B|) :D:D
Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...

wear whatever you are going to be comfortable in - people get dressed for the christmas show because its a holiday thing i guess - but nowadays people wear jeans all the time - i know i do - all i care is that im comfy - i mean i look presentable - but if im going to be in nyc you can bet your ass that i'm in flat shoes - i like to still have feeling in my feet at the end of the day

as far as shows - i would suggest looking into tickets NOW - because quite honestly shows are sold out WAY in advance - especially the christmas spectacular (i personally find it overrated - but not bad if you're only going once - i went alllllll the time when i was younger)
rent is amazing - an stomp i have not seen but looks awesome - i would also suggest the blue man group in case the others are sold out....
good luck, have fun - and BE COMFORTABLE

Thanks for the info! I suppose I could pack one nice pair of black slacks and a sweater and wear it to each show. I mean, who is going to know but us, right?

We do already have our tickets for the Rockettes. I thought that since Rent and Stomp have been running for so long, that we might be able to get the 1/2 tickets on the day. Should I not count on that?

I've already seen BMG and they are setting up a permanant show in Orlando next year anyway, so we'll wait until it comes here. My daughter likes musicals, and I suggested A Chorus Line to her since it came back to Broadway. Has anyone seen it?

The Rockettes are completely different from Broadway.

You can wear Jeans to the Rockettes. Stomp and Rent, you might want to dress up a little more. Pants, instead of jeans. Dresses only if you feel like it. I don't wear ties to the theatre, but will usually wear a suit with a pullover shirt.

Jeans just don't cut it for Broadway. the Rockettes, however, are not Broadway. :)

It's hard to count on the 1/2 tickets for any show, especially this time of the year. I would go with a list of your top 5 shows and you'll most probably get one of those. Get on line early though!

And for the show, jeans are *ok*, dress is way more than you need (but sometimes it's fun to dress up!). I would say nice pants and a sweater is perfect-- and of course you can wear the same outfit to each show :P

You guys are going to have a great time :)

I've been to a couple of shows this year and have seen anything from semi-formal to ratty t-shirts and sneakers.

I have worn nice jeans, jacket, boots or have gone dressed up a little more. It all depends on my dinner plans before or after the show.

I vote for CASUAL NICE. Have a great time. New York is great this time of year. And don't forget to make a trip downtown to the Magnolia Bakery. B|

I saw A Chorus Line back when 'it was' on broadway.. Very nice, however you do have to appreciate a real musical - meaning more traditional.. Which I do - laugh.. I've also seen 'A Few Good Men' and 'La Cage Aux Faul'.. They were also very good, but a much different style of entertainment than say "Stomp" - Which was very cool..

And Skymama, regarding clothes, most of the suggestions are right on with the business/formal for an evening show and even jeans/sweater for the day.. But, I would really stay away from any sandals.. It is gonna be COLD...

Go get yourself and your daughter a comfortable set of heeled boots.. Something you can step off the curb into some nice icy water and not be bummed:).. I remember one winter day in Boston very well when I filled my uniform shoes with ice water:P - I learned how to dress a lot more like the locals - When I was off duty..

Hey, you could even go with some nice knee-high boots, black lace teddy, little bow in your hair - Ooops, Sorry, wrong topic :)
Have fun on the trip.. I still have photos of me and a past GF from the top of the World Trade Center that we took before we grabbed our matinee tickets down in the lobby from the TICKS Booth... Some great trips..

Once the plane takes off, you're gonna have to land - Might as well jump out!!
