If you want HD, then get a HD for the name. They're not bad bikes, but every-single-person has a HD softtail it seems.

I'm a pretty big fan of the VTX, they're solid, they're reliable and they're good looking bikes.

The downside to the VTX is the availability of engine upgrades. There's more options for your tranny and motor with a HD then for any metric cruiser. For all the chrome nick-nacks that people like to bolt on their bikes, its about even on whats available.

Personally if I was buying a factory bike tomorrow I would buy a VTX.

I'd have to agree...the VTX screams Fat Boy all over the place! Besides, it's a fucking Honda for Christ sake!!! If you're buying new, better financing and insurance on Harleys - they send a different message to the "suits" than do foreign bikes.
I'm partial to Harleys for many different reasons, but I'm not a fan of any of the softails because of the B motor, counter-balanced models. I guess I need to get used to it as I know they're going away...get ready for water cooled HD's in the next few years!
Harley's just have personality, style, history, and the ability to customize beyond anything stock looking...and it WILL hold it's value beyond your imagination - as opposed to ANY Jap bike that depreciates 50% the minute you take possesion.
Harley's have real western hemisphere heavy metal in them, not the lightweight hollow iron and aluminum in the foreign jobbies...which you will notice at speed on the highway. Reliability is not an issue with Harley like it was in the old days...and their warranty is better than Honda - double! The 07 Harleys are big blocks! 96cu motor witha six speed tranny!!!
Honda makes all sorts of things and specializes in nothing...they're even trying to make a jet now!
I've had 5 Harley's, 5 Kawasakis, 1 Honda (NEVER again) and currently ride a 2005 HD Road Glide.

ok...bring on the onslaught from those of you that couldn't afford the Harley...:P

Take a Harley to make it your own, if you want to blend in, take the bus or buy a Jap bike.

bike.

I can easily afford to own a harley i chose NOT too.
I ride Moto Guzzi, and my bike has 300oookm on it. with rings and valve guides the only replacements. That's reliablility.
Most Harleys are over priced Tosser bikes:ph34r:

Attached is what my bike looked like the day I bought it, the link below is what I built it into

That's customising;):P

Yup, my jap bike looks just like every other bike on the road...[:/]

Buying any stock cruiser from just about any major company no days will have you blending in with the crowd. Having a blister-package custom will have you blending in with the crowd. If that's what you want, then do it and ride the hell out of it. If you don't, then go another route and ride the hell out of it. Whatever you buy who cares what it is, as long as you're happy and you ride the hell out of it.

Anti-anything but HD people annoy me. Anti-HD metric riders annoy me. Buy what you like and what you can afford and ride the hell out of it. If all you can afford in a 1990 Honda 750, then get it, make it your own and ride the hell out of it. I've found that the people with the biggest bullshit attitudes are the ones that barely ride. The same people that trailer their bikes to a bike ralley and ride in the last mile.

suspension always seems like the first thing...or is it because I buy Harleys that I have to do that bit first??Crazy

the you'll be putting in cams, some intake and exhaust mods..

The suspension on my KawaChop is pretty good from the factory, although even with the rear set on the stiffest setting I wish it was stiffer. I'm planning on hardtailing it this year anyways, so it shouldn't matter.

Exhaust and intake mods are to be done on any bike and any car. For the most part every vehicle sold is undertuned. For a carb bike/car its intake and exhaust mods with new jetting. For any EFI vehicle its the same with new mapping or a new chip. Literally everything with an engine and wheels that's ever been made in the 20th and 21st century could stand to be upgraded in that regard.

On what?

SV650

The exhaust (and intake) mods on that bike are mostly comestic (but are on the list too ). You may be able to get a couple HP more (i've heard between 3 and 6) with a _full_ exhaust, rejet and allegedly filters, but for $500-800, there's a lot more to be gained with the suspension on them. The front, especially, is very mushy.

I had an SV 650 S as well and i totally agree about the budget suspension. Definitely the first thing to change. But a busa shock? isn't that overkill??!
I have a good friend who had the project bike for these guys http://www.jhsracing.co.uk/mini_twins.htm
He got really good results from just a dyno run and a bit of power commander fiddling etc with the full M4 system. Said the 5 extra bhp made a hell of a difference. Let us know how it all goes (i want to know even if no-one else does!)

Well, I hope not! lol...

I did some research. The stock 1st gen stock is 510# (which is the version I have). The 2nd gen is even less stiff. The busa is 700. All the smaller GSXR are better quality, but less stiff then the 1st gen shock.

It'll be a trial! lol.. I dont even know if it will fit, or rub on the side of the swingarm. If it does fit, and handles well, its a keeper. If it doesnt, of well, it was only $35 from ebay!. I dont really wanna spend $600 on Olins... [:/]

But, no matter what, the front springs and oil are getting upgraded in January.
