Spectre 170 vs Spectre 190 vs something else ;)

Recommended Posts

I currently jump a Spectre 170 loaded at 1.12 (exit weigth about 191 lbs) for the last 15-20 jumps.
My landings have been consistent, no problems etc, plaining out nice accros the ground, in high or no winds.
However, when there are no winds, I'm going pretty fast accross the ground, maybe a bit to fast.
I have been thinking recently about upsizing to a 190 (WL would then be about 1.0).

For the people who have flown both Spectre sizes, pretty much around my WL, is the difference in speed of the canopy significant?

I ask this because, before I jumped the Spectre, I downsides from a Quadra 190 to a Quadra 170 and didn't feel much difference in the speed of these two sizes. However, when I went to the Spectre 170, I felt that it flew much faster then the Quadra 170.

Is just upsizing ok, or would it maybe be better to change the type of canopy I'm jumping?

Thanks! :)

I only have one jump on a quadra, a long time ago... A spectre is one of the slowest (forward speed) canopies, so if it's too fast for you, a bigger spectre would go slower.

It would be smart to demo one (in 0 wind if you can too). If you can't demo/borrow where you jump, The Parachute Case (Teuge, NL) has a spectre 190 if I'm correct, which you can rent (best if you jump it at teuge though). You could also try other canopies there in different sizes to see if you like something else better. Although a spectre is perfect if you want to do wingsuit jumps later ;)
Demoing/renting for a day works out cheaper than buying the wrong canopy (again)...

BTW good on you for wanting to upsize!

I jumped spectre 170 & 190:
WL 1.05 @190
WL 1.17 @170

I had some 200 jumps on 170 when I switched gear with a friend and jumped 190

on first jump: it was a bus, big, slow, boring - compared to 170
on second jump: I was so bored that started to play making quick turns - and managed to almost get a linetwist flying below 1000ft :o
still remember that feeling

to unswer your question: there is a difference
I was making 15-20 jumps each weekend
and 170 was interesting enaugh for me for some 300 jumps
