wmw999 2,603 #2 December 5, 2006 Lots and lots. When you go to the statue, use the cog railway; it's a whole tour. Sugarloaf (it's the gondola at the end of Copacabana beach). The botanical garden is great. Hang gliding at Gavea. The crafts market in Ipanema (hippie fair) has been going every Sunday (don't remember about Saturdays) since about 1970. Dunno about restaurants any more. It's been a long time since I lived there, but it was a great place to be a high school student Consider taking a guided tour; you'll be in an escorted group, yes, but you'll also be more guaranteed not to wander where you shouldn't. Robbery can be a problem; keep your backpack on your chest, and your money in a belt or inside envelope -- just a couple of throwdown small bills where a pickpocket might take them. The place to find them is at the Praia de Pepino Beach below Gavea, they will drive you up the mountain. Both of us did parapente last january, and I stayed up 40 minutes at sunset, with views of two sides of the mountain, it was GREAT! In the evening, LAPA is the happening place. There are lots of great music places there. Our favorite is RIO SCENARIUM. Centro Cultural Carioca (237 Rua Sete de Setembro; 55-21-2252-6468; www.centroculturalcarioca.com.br). The floor-to-ceiling windows that typify Lapa here offer a view of a plaza with stunning Portuguese-style architecture; the stage is 100 percent Brazilian. Usually around 15 reais; closed Sundays.
