Suit manufacturers or accomplished suit makers.....

Recommended Posts

I am putting together my own FF Suit out of 4-ply taslan and have run into problems using the nylon thread, type 69 that I used to sew the panels together, to satin stitch my designs on top of the panels. Yeah, its obvious overkill on the thread size, but its the only nylon that I have and the town I live in doesn't carry crap for nylon or polyester that is strong enough.

So the million dollar question for those that make suits, what size poly or nylon should I be using for this application? Also, are you using bonded or soft thread. Just so I am clear, this is the zig zag that completely covers the designs that overlay the main suit. I can't walk into a store in this town and test and look at these threads, so I am left with online stores and ordering blindly can get expensive.

If I am reading this right. You are using a heavy thread??
I would not use a larger thread then size e based on the larger the tread the easier it is to rip under stress.. I am not too sure of the material you are using.

But I always use size e. with 9 to 10 stitches per an inch just like when working on parachutes... Of course I double sew a line one eight an inch on high stress areas: armpits, groin and seat areas....

They always seem to hold up alot better then those other brands that folks spend hundreds of dollars for.... and mine are done in two days....

Just hope this helps..let me know if you need further assistance if i can.. I just hope that I am on track of what you are after.....

thanks..

Monkey,

They will allow me to use their machines as demo's, but its not the machine that is the issue for me here, its knowing what kind of thread to order for my application. Since no one in this town carries anything but stuff for making quilts and frilly stuff like that, there is nothing to try out.

Kenneth,

I used type 69 also known as Tex 70 or Gov E to sew the panels together. I was going to use them to satin stitch the patterns on, but that proved too much for the machine. I need a lighter thread in either polyester or nylon. Straight stitch is no problem when sewing with 69 on Taslan. BTW, 4-ply Taslan is the same material that Liquid Sky uses. It is a very tight fabric that is incredibly strong, yet drapes nicely with no stiffness.

Gato,

I am using a Viking/Huskavarna model 630. Its about 8 years old and I bought it used for 225.

honestly, if you have type 69.. whoever you got that from should also have A or AA nylon... just order some... if I were you I would find a non-bonded nylon, it's less scratchy. we use Type 69 "E" thread on our pants but for any applique type work we use a lighter thread like A or AA. hobby, fabric and sewing stores tend not to have thread worth a damn, you need to order it from an industrial source, these are usually hard to find unless you know who to talk to, if worse comes to worse, call para-gear.
