Special Paris Restaurant

Recommended Posts

I was walking through Central Park in August when a downpour hit. I ran to a shelter where there were a bunch of people, including two young people from Romania and France. In our conversation I found out this guy is a badass cook in a pretty cool restaurant in Paris.

This restaurant has a basement, created when they excavated the rock for the foundation of the Statue of Liberty. Anyone have ANY idea where this restaurant is?!

(I lost the address Matthieu gave me, but I still want a free meal in Paris in two weeks!):)

Are you sure? The foundation for the Statue of Liberty was built upon the old Fort Wood that had been on that island. The pedistal was from granite dug from Leete's Island, Conn.

You sure the guy wasn't full of shit?

hhhmmmm yeah i have been reading and reading and it seems you are correct.

They constructed the statue in France and then disassembled it again for shipment. Maybe there are two bases?

Can't find anything on his version of the story. I don't see why he would have bs'd though.

Oh well, i'll ask around Paris, if it is the case I am sure it would be at least somewhat known in Paris.

Tour D'Argent

They carved out the basement to make one of the most incredible wine cellars in the world.

They also covered it up so the Nazi's wouldn't find the wines there, dating back from the 1500's.

To this day, it ranks as one of the top three meals I've ever, ever, ever had in my life.

somehow...I figured YOU would know! B|;)

It's 5am and I can't sleep. What else is there to do?

I'm a cheese whore. The cheese at that place was sick. Along with the rest of their food. I think I still have, somewhere at home, my duck #. (Each duck they serve is individually numbered.)

He was probably talking about the stone that forms the base of lady liberty on the Ile de Cygnus (isle of the swans) in the Seine River. It's a 1/4 replica of our statue of liberty.

If you're going to france then anyway, one of the river seine boat tour guides might know all about the statue.

Also, if the restaurant itself is that tasty and interesting, I'd bet it would be listed in the Rick Steves "Through the Back Door" guide to France or Paris. Might be best to start there, because those guidebooks are fabulous for travel anyway. The Ireland one rescued us several times when getting to a town and having no clue where to stay for the night or find food. You could even try contacting the nice people at www.ricksteves.com and asking them.
