Gawain's Useful Web-site Reference Guide

Recommended Posts

Of course, we all know there is no shortage of opinions and input whether it's requested or not. It makes for good conversation, you know. However, in the 12+ years I've been online I've come across some favorite sites:

Cars:
www.edmunds.com
www.caranddriver.com
Edmunds is a very well rounded resource, with profiles on just about every car available in the US, plus they are better than Kelly Blue Book with their "True Market Value" parameters. Car & Driver is a magazine I've subscribed to for over 20 years, and their content online is great.

Electronics:
www.cnet.com
cNet is jam-packed. That almost makes it more difficult, but they provide decent insight with lots of different products.

Saving Money (simple bank savings, interest rates, etc):
www.bankrate.com
It's like the Yahoo! of finding cleanly presented information about tucking some money away for savings, etc.

Everything else:
www.dropzone.com
This web-site contains a virtual cornucopia of points of reference to just about anything and everything on planet earth. Yeah, some attitudes are monkey-like in nature, and not every question or inquiry gets answered, but what the hey...it's all good stuff.

Feel free to add your favorites...;)
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Road Trips -

California HIghway Patrol Traffic Incident Info - statewide up to the minute traffic info. This is where CA TV and radio stations get their traffic info.
AccuTraffic - links to traffic and road construction info throughout the US

Time wasters and games -

Stumbleupon - fun toolbar for mindless websurfing...
Dragon Fable - free web RPG; lots of fun! More game options (weapons, armor, quests) are available if you pay money.
Adventure Quest - another free web RPG, but you get limited game time if you don't pay money.
Bookworm - Addictive. Nuff said.
Web Sudoku
It's Your Turn - play classic board games (chess, reversi, checkers, battleship, etc) and variations with people from all over the world, without having to be online at the same time. Kinda like the old "chess by mail" idea. Free accounts are limited to 15 moves per day but that's enough to play a few games at a time.
One More Level - numerous addictive games...

Music and sounds -

Librivox - free audiobooks. All books are in the public domain (ie classics) and read by volunteer readers.
Pandora - Find music you'll like based on music you already like.

Outdoor stuff -

Backpacker.com - the website for the magazine. Active forums.
Rockclimbing.com - slacklining forum (and good info on rockclimbing too)
Trail Journals - trail journals from long trail (ie PCT, AT, CDT) thru hikers.

Other stuff -

First Things First - a huge pile of links to news, entertainment, magazine, tv, etc websites

You reminded me of one more:
www.nndb.com
A great database that connects the various "relationships" that some people have. Pretty neat.
