slotperfect 7 #1 December 11, 2006 What file size do you use for all of your .mp3 files? I have been ripping them too big (best quality setting) and they take up too much room on my player. What is optimum .mp3 file size?Arrive Safely John

Cudlo 0 #3 December 11, 2006 3-5MBs is fairly common. 128k is CD quality if I recall and takes up 3-5._________________________________________ "People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid." - Kierkegaard
slotperfect 7 #4 December 11, 2006 Quote128k is CD quality I also noticed that .mp3 player advertisements say their gizmo will hold X amount of songs, based on a certain length and 128kb file size.Arrive Safely John
Cudlo 0 #5 December 11, 2006 eh.. they're still bullshitting really.. as it depends on how long the songs are. but roughly at 128k, 1 minute = 1 mb give or take a little_________________________________________ "People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid." - Kierkegaard
The111 1 #6 December 11, 2006 Quote128k is CD quality if I recall Not true, especially with older encoders (newer encoders can do a better job). An audiophile I am not, but even with my shitty speakers I can discern a difference between 128kbps and 192kbps. I've always used 192k as my minimum. And technically, compressed audio will never be "CD quality". But if you can get it close enough that you can't tell the difference, that's good enough for you. I've heard audiophiles swear that 192k sounds like crap, and if they have the equipment and the ears to tell the difference, then more power to them. If space is your problem, get a bigger player. I have a 60GB and it's not big enough... www.WingsuitPhotos.com

Slappie 9 #8 December 11, 2006 128k is ok if you're just want noise in your ears and something to listen too. 2-3mb depending on length 192k is probably a minimum for me if I'm listening to music in the car. 4-5mb 320k is the closest to CD quality. It sounds good in the car, home stereo or really nice ear buds. 7-10mb VBR - Variable Bit Rate is pretty nice too, it varies the bit rate across the song. 6-10mb FLAC is CD Quality lossless digital music. 12-25mb You can use many flavors of encoders, each one will sound different. Just depends purely on what you're willing to give up for space. unformed 0 #9 December 11, 2006 128 is crap. That's for people still living in the 90s with small hard drives and slow connections. 192 is absolute minimum. For classical, jazz, or anything with large ranges of sound, I'd go 256 minimum, but preferably 320 or FLAC. Even with shitty speakers I'll notice the difference between 128 and 192.This ad space for sale.
