No Fear! No Fear? Apparently not.

Recommended Posts

No Fear clothing was huge when I was a teenager. Everyone was wearing it, even the fat guys whose only fear was to run out of Mt. Dew and twinkies while sitting on the couch.

The creater of the No Fear business commited suicide. I feel really bad for his wife and son. Suicide isn't a solution, its an escape. A large number of people in your life have been there at some point, on the edge of life with severe depression. People understand what you're going through. Don't be so selfish to think otherwise. Go get help from a professional.

No Fear founder Marty Moates dies at 49

LA COSTA, Calif., Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Marty Moates -- a motorcycle champion who was later a founder of the No Fear sportswear firm in California -- has died at 49 in an apparent suicide.

Moates' wife, Heather, found him in his car near their home in La Costa, north of San Diego, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Friends said Moates was living in great pain from old motorcycle-related injuries.

Moates' upset victory in the 1980 U.S. Grand Prix of Motocross at Carlsbad Raceway was a landmark moment in American motorcycle racing history. No American had defeated the more experienced European riders in 10 years of the U.S. round in the 500cc world championship series.

His infectious smile and prankish sense of humor made him one of the sport's best-liked figures, the Times said.

With fellow racers Mark and Brian Simo, he later helped found No Fear, a clothing brand that appealed to adventurous young sportsmen. Moates was also president of FMF International, a spinoff of No Fear that specializes in motocross gear.

The FMF Web site said Wednesday Moates would "be greatly missed."

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Dakota.

If I was in a lot of permanent pain that couldn't be corrected I could see checking myself out. So I personally wouldn't judge anyone harshly for taking that road in that circumstance.

If that was the case, then I hope you would make sure your family knew why and when and they were ok with it.

How many people that commit suicide are in a constant state of chronic physical pain and not just suffering from some sort of treatable mental condition (PTSD, depression, bi-polar, etc)?

I used to think the same thing. Then I worked in medicine, and I saw what some people went through. I can't imagine a more horrific way to go than pancreatic cancer - an exceedingly painful death.

My thought is this - within five minutes I could have you begging me to kill you. This guy was probably absolutely miserable and literally could take it no more.

I think there are plenty of circumstances in which suicide is an understandable option. When someone makes the most important decision of their life, I'm hesitant to criticize it because I can't possibly know everything they factored into their decision. I do think that parents who are considering it should evaluate how fully they've met their obligations though, and try to persevere if they're capable of properly finishing their job.

Anybody that doesnt understand someone who lives with chronic pain, thats never going to go away, needs to try it for a day or two. I have.....and believe me, on a few of those many, many long sleepless nights I have given it considerable thought.

I'm not whining....thats just the way it is.

IMO: Although help from a professional could better the situation, depression creates a disconnect between people who are suffering and their friends/family who do their best to empathize. Having been in both states (like many) attempting to communicate with the "other side" is a very difficult task as the rational processes are very different. It is tough stuff, and if it was as easy as talking it out or getting help, we'd have a lot less suicides.

Well if it was that bad surely some opiate would work well? Of course he will be going from one hell to another, but at least he would be alive...?

There comes a time when the opiates dont work anymore. Ever try Methadone? Thats what you get when all the others quit working. Its a shitty way to live.
I have had three friends...skydivers....take their own lives in the last five years because they couldnt live with the pain anymore of their injuries.
Dont criticise.....just say i'm sorry you had to go.

But why live your life in a stooper? Seriously think about it. I for one would not want to remain alive as a veggie. but that is my opinion.

At the point I cannot live my life and enjoy it, why? Each person has what they can tolerate, Pain sucks, real pain. Im not talking just a little owie...but the stuff that keeps you up at night, that makes even the most simple tasks hell....

I try to imagine what it would be like to stuck in the amount of pain I was in with my shoulder and stuck there. And I would NEVER want to live that way.

You cannot assume you know what someone else is going through. Sometimes we only know part of a HUGE picture. It is also easy to jump to conclusions, and as humans we are quite good at doing that. I know I have done it, and try not too...but sometimes we just do.

I have an Aunt with some combination of spinal damage and nervous system deterioration.

She has a morphine pump implanted IN her body. She cant drive, can do most things for herself, is just a bit off, has difficulty holding a conversation for more than 60 seconds, and is in constant pain.

I have to wonder, at what point does you stop "living" and just become "alive". But thats the great debate, and here we go to SC. [:/]

One of the problems is that the point is different for different people.

And another side is that it's such an intense and strong issue, that person a. can't imagine why person b. would feel any differently.

I sincerely hope I never have to think about this first hand.

At an early Bridge Day (late 80s) we are still doing the BASE trade show at the gym in downtown Fayetteville. It wasn't much, just a few folding tables along one wall. Todd's there when he was T&T Rigging, Adam is there as Consolidated Rigging, and Dennis is on another table with Gravity Sports. A few others are selling pilot chutes and accessories, and from year to year that was about it.

Except this year is different.

No Fear had a booth. Now a for real "booth" at this thing was a big enough deal, but this is "corporate" and none of those types had ever come within a million miles of BASE jumping before now. Of course half of us thought it was great and the other half thought the bastards were using us.

Ritchie and I are talking to the No Fear reps and we asked, "Are you jumping from the Bridge tomorrow?" And in a sea of shirts proclaiming No Fear, they all said, "No Fucking Way . . . !"

It was hypocritically funny and very sad all at the same time. Moe suggested they change their name. Over the next ten years we still laughed every time we saw someone wearing a lame No Fear shirt.

I laugh everytime I see a beat-up truck or car around here sporting a "No Fear" sticker. Stupid rednecks... :S

Screw you guys! :P

I still wear a "no fear" t-shirt to the DZ.
It reads

BALLS:
aka cajones
Preferably made of brass or steel.

I think it applies to or sport. B|

Although, I never had any stickers on my car. Even though I was drag racing an 11 second street car. :P

I wish.

People suck. And I blame everyone on this Earth for every suicide that occurs. It's all our faults. We drive people to this. We like to blame those that commit suicide, but I like to blame everyone else. It's our faults and our failures too. Probably more so than theirs.
