RkyMtnHigh 0 #1 December 4, 2006 Isn't Ska music a combination of reggae and jazz? Do any of you have a favorite Ska band? _________________________________________
SpeedRacer 1 #2 December 4, 2006 No. Ska music was around before reggae. The word Reggae was invented by Frederick "Toots" Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals in 1968. Jamaican popular music at the time was called ska or blue-beat. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
wmw999 2,599 #3 December 4, 2006 My son used to listen to it, and I really like a lot of it. More like swing on steroids than a combination of reggae and jazz, though. But I guess it would depend on the group, too While they're older bands and don't exist any more, I liked Save Ferris and Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Lindercles 0 #4 December 4, 2006 It really depends on which type of Ska you're talking about. The bands you mentioned are more like third wave ska, which is sort of a modern pop approach to 2 Tone Ska, which was original Ska mixed with European punk. The original genre was a mix between traditional Jamaican music and Jazz.

simplyputsi 0 #7 December 4, 2006 Ska is metal and big band mixed together to me. Or punk metal and big band you decide. Mustard Plug has some good hits. Another band name eludes me right now. errrrrrr. No doubt was borderline ska as well as the bosstones. Less than Jake had some great ska before the "Sell out" Johnny quest thinks were sellin out sellin outSkymama's #2 stalker -

sweetmoose 0 #11 December 4, 2006 Well, I've really only known one kind of ska, don't know if there are more, I would say ska is happy punk (i consider punk more of an attitude than a genre of music) spiced up with horn intruments like trumpets and trombone. My favorite ska band is Reel Big Fish, they got some good cd's! If you haven't heard them you should check em out.We die only once, but for such a very long time. rs2kmk5 0 #17 December 4, 2006 Madness was never 'ska' - more like pop music at the time - but very good pop music at that. Bit of reading for ya's if interested. http://www.bbc.co.uk/stoke/features/2004/11/ska_anniversary_1.shtml IMO The Specials exemplified late 70's / early 80's ska - 'a message to Rudy' is and always will be awesome.
