Cokes marketing put him in a Red suit and it kinda stuck from there. December 6th was his saint's day, when children would be either rewarded for good behaviour (with presents) or "punished"... St Nicklaus became Santa Klaus, and the whole present thingie was moved over to X-Mas. When, I don't know...
