Mass Storage Controller? Computer Geniuses Please Help!

Recommended Posts

If anyone out there is well versed in Win XP, I need your help. I seem to be unable to get my built in SD card reader to work anymore, and when I took a look at the device manager, a device called a "Mass Storage Controller" under the catagory "Other Devices" is not functioning, and windows can't seem to install a driver for it. Does anyone know how I can remedy this? Thanks!

Erm... well. It might have just fried (which is a little rare). If that is the cause just get an external card reader, or look at your printer and see if it has one (Win XP will recognize the card readers on a printer automatically... usually...)

It probably gave a little more detail than just "it failed"

what changes did you make recently? How long has it worked and when did it stop working? What were you doing / changing when it stopped? What other hardware have you installed recently?

"...The wizard could not find the required software." I haven't installed anything recently, it worked for ~2 months, and stopped working ~2wks ago. I wasn't really doing anything when it stopped, I just tried to use it one day, and it was defunct.

The Windows driver installer almost never works on its own, especially where unusual devices (e.g., SD card readers) are concerned: they are very vendor-specific.

Download the driver from the vendor's website and point the System Properties installer to that.

Speculation as to cause? The driver got corrupted somehow. Better do a drive integrity check. Use your system tools to check for OS errors / missing data.

To add to what Mark said, there's been times that I've had to completely delete the device from the device manager and re-install the vendor's driver software from scratch.

Alright, more confusion comes this way... I guess I should have looked further down the list, but the device with the error must have caught my eye before I could realize that there is a "Secure Digital Host Controller" or something to that effect on the list as well. Is the Mass Storage Controller some kind of adjunct to the SD reader?

Computer make & model, please.
And is it possible for you to give us an exploded view of what you're looking at - like attached?

Are you looking under the Storage Controller or the SD Host adapters?
