Construction - Bleh!

Recommended Posts

ARrrhhh. It's been about 3 weeks since the house flooded and work still won't be done for a while.

We've got two incompetent guys working on tearing out all the drywall in one room, covering venting holes that were drilled in the walls, replacing baseboards, painting, texturizing.... Every one of my construction buddies that has come over says the work should take about 2, maximum 3 days for one person. These two guys are telling me more than a week!

They didn't even sweep up after themselves yesterday and drywall dust and debris got all over everything. They were shocked when I came home halfway through the day and put in a special request for drop cloths to cover our stuff.

And to top it off.. I've been working on writing essays and personal statements for grad school and one guy is going around singing everytime he gets close to our little office. I hope it's not for my benefit.:S

Just need to vent. It is frustrating living in a construction zone.

Lately, contractor work has gotten so bad that if you want it done right, sometimes you've just got to do it yourself! Roofing, plumbing and wiring work excepted of course....

My boyfriend, who hangs drywall for a living and takes pride in his work, came home and wrote instructions for them all over the walls.

I'm a bit pissed that they didn't even sweep the area when they left for the day. I'm so non-confrontational, but I need to tell them before they leave that not cleaning up their job site in unacceptable.

Man.. I'm going nuts here.

3 days so far and they haven't finished removing drywall from two walls that are 8x8 and a ceiling that is 8x8. That probably should have taken about 2-4 hours.

At least with their presence I'm pretty much forced to retreat to our office and work on grad school applications.

Because Jeff has a full time job and keeps real busy packing reserves. He wants some free time.. My buddies are busy with their jobs too, and the decision is ultimately up to my landlord as to who to hire.

And we're wary about doing work for a landlord. It seems like whenever that has happened in the past, we get the short end of the stick and it really complicates the relationship.

Well, I am a general contractor, and not telling a drywall sub how he should do his work...but....your right. Friend's house flooded, with raw sewage.

We hired a company to come clean and dis-infect...done within 8 hours of flood. We let it dry out for a week, I hung the drywall one day, and using a faster setting joint compound, I was able to texture and paint the following 2 days. 4 work days, including initial clean up. So yeah, these guys suck.

Will you come help me? :( ( <--- Pitiful face.)

While I was gone doing errands the guys went thru my cupboards and used my dishes for their lunch. WTF??? Then they left them in the sink and left, without cleaning up. Drywall dust and debris is all in my stove. Don't know if they're coming back.

Found out that while they advertise that they are licensed bonded and insured, they are not. Is it time to file a complaint?

First, call your landlord and make a complaint. Document the time, date, etc. Start making a list of all the things these guys are doing, again, detailed times and dates. Basically start building a case against them. Don't feel like you have to just live with it because you are not the property owner, you have rights too.

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

I do believe the basic understanding when you rent an apartment is the right to a "safe and reliable" dwelling. Do some research. Also, unless the landlord is partial to these guys, it may not be his fault, he may be getting screwed as well as you, so by montering what these yahoos are doing, you are a help to your landlord. I am a landlord, and I would appreciate it.
