Shotgun 1 #1 December 21, 2006 Just watched this movie last night. It was good, but I'm not sure how it compares to the book since I haven't read the book. The animation (over real acting) was pretty cool. And I thought that the portrayal of the drug culture was pretty true to life. Has anyone else seen this movie? pfloyd 0 #5 December 21, 2006 That movie was awesome, I had to watch it in the theater, my wife and I thought it had a really cool look to it since it was animated over the real acting. Remember when the guy was seeing bugs all over him and kept trying to scratch them off--hilarious. Plus I couldn't call the ending like I usually do in most movies. Well done! Samurai136 0 #8 December 21, 2006 The movie is a very accurate translation of the book. Some of my favorite anecdotes from the novel were left out of the movie. But its still 95% book to screen translation."Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken
Guest #9 December 21, 2006 It's a fairly faithful film version of the Phil Dick novel. It was a very good read, and the movie does it justice, but I really think you have to have read the book to appreciate the film. However, it was cool that a movie was finally made, and cooler still that it was an art-house flick, and not really intended for widespread distribution. I know that some of the dialog from the book was left out due to time constraints (my favorite scene in the book [and missing from the feature] was the debate about smuggling a human-sized block of hash. The film technique is called "rotoscoping" - look it up. mh"The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
moodyskydiver 0 #10 December 21, 2006 We saw it at the theater when it came out b/c my hubby is a big Phillip K. Dick fan.I think the movie did a very good job of portraying the book.Ofcourse the book can be a bit hard to read at times if you're not familiar with P.K. Dick's style.I found if you read it while you're not sober makes it easier to understand. All in all, a pretty good book and movie. "...just an earthbound misfit, I." Lindercles 0 #11 December 21, 2006 If you like the animation style, check out Waking Life. It was also directed by Linklater, and came out in 2001. It was his first attempt at animating over live action, and also came out pretty cool. Plus it was all filmed in Austin, so you might actually recognize some of the places it was filmed. Incidentally, the part that takes place at UT was filmed in the department that I was in at the time.
Shotgun 1 #12 December 21, 2006 Quotecheck out Waking Life I just looked up the trailer for that (http://www.wakinglifemovie.com/trailer.html). Looks like an interesting movie; I'll definitely check that out. Oh, and it looks like it has Glover Gill and Guy Forsyth in it (some of my favorite Austin musicians) - nice. Sounds interesting, though I don't know much about animation in general. They also show how it is done on one of the dvd features. It would've been just as good without the animation stuff, maybe better. It got distracting sometimes. The acting is superb. Robert Downey Jr. is brilliant. That seen where they are arguing over the car engine....too funny. That all being said, it is not a movie for everyone and certainly not for the tastes of our "American Idolized" culture. http://www.skydiveatlanta.com http://www.musiccityskydiving.com
 Join the conversation You can post now and register later.
