Butters 0 #26 December 22, 2006 QuoteI hope you put a good 6k volts through that thing, because most hot wires won't phase dogs that size or mentality. I know people that had a large dog and were trying to use an electric fence. It didn't work. Every time they increased the electricity or added another electric fence, the dog would just start running from farther away to make it through. Eventually their house was struck by lightning and they had to remove all the electric fences. Some dogs require a real fence, a physical boundary that they can not circumvent."That looks dangerous." Have you told your aunt that despite all the efforts being done to restrain her dogs in her fenced-in backyard with electric wires, if the dogs somehow escape into your yard, you have the right to shoot them dead? Maybe then she'll spend the extra bucks to make sure that fence is impenetrable. Skolls081102 0 #29 December 22, 2006 I know it would be difficult to do, but I think you need to tell your Aunt that if she refuses to do something about the situation (other than the electric fence) that you will. Family or not- if I were in your shoes, animal control would already have been called. I hate to even think this, but what if it were one of your kids, or you for that matter, that these dogs decide to go for next. If therrs 4 of them, no one of you stands a chance if caught off guard. I would not wait to see if these dogs will attack again- its just a matter of when, and who. I am sorry for your loss. AggieDave 6 #30 December 22, 2006 Sounds like you've got a case of a set of dangerous animals. You should call ACU out on them. SkydiveStMarys 0 #32 December 22, 2006 Agreed....one or two dogs together are fine, but when you get more then three together the "whole pecking" order comes into play..... they eat as a "pack", play as a "pack", sleep as a "pack", every dog in the house hold has a "place" within the pack and you can defiantly see it as an owner. I own four dogs. I am extremely careful not to let them out if there are other dogs or pets of any kind near them. They will take it down. They know I am the pack leader though thats for sure. You must establish leadership within the pack or there will be major trouble. So sorry to hear this..... BobbiA miracle is not defined by an event. A miracle is defined by gratitude. AFFI 0 #33 December 22, 2006 Observations of a self-proclaimed dog expert: Quote“I am a total animal lover, not any kind I don't like” “They ain't my dogs; if they were they would already be fish food....” I am a total animal lover, not any kind I don’t like, well except the ones I want to turn into fish food… QuoteOnly problem now is, that once a dog has tasted fresh blood, they will continue to kill, especially in "pack" situations like my Aunt & Uncle's dogs. When once you have tasted blood, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned meatward, for there you have been, and there you will always want to be. Leonardo DaMinci Quotethis was a viscious pack act, that was un called for. For something to be “uncalled for” there must be an established idea as to what right and wrong is, which is a capability dog’s do not seem to have been born with. Dog’s are not capable of malice, acts of vengeance or fraud against corporations. They are just dog’s… QuoteNext time this happens throw your aunt to the pack and then break up the pack adopt out two or three of them to a rescue group and then sit back and have a nice hog roast. We talking about roasting dear Auntie or the Pot Bellied Pig? Quotemake sure that fence is impenetrable. If someone out there knows how to construct in impenetrable fence, we need one along the Mexican border. There might be a sweet government contract in it for ya! I would not wait to see if these dogs will attack again- its just a matter of when, and who. As has already been established, dog’s will be dogs and Mike is spot on about the speculation concerning the untrained dog’s inability to differentiate the children from the pot bellied pig. Children get killed by domestic animals all the time and as with all accidents there are usually red flags the led up to the accident. Seems to me the red flag has been unfurled. 4-Dogs of this type, untrained, in a pack and around children? This is a potential disaster waiting to happen. As a preemptive course of action the dogs need to be separated into new homes away from children or put down. moodyskydiver 0 #35 December 23, 2006 Well, here is my $.02 after having similar trouble with neighbors' dogs getting on our property and chasing our horses and fighting with our dog.We have 76 acres in the country, 25 horses and 1 dog. First, call the owner and warn them to keep their dogs away/off of your property.Since she is the owner of the dogs she is liable for the damages the dogs caused to your fence and your daughter's pet.You can and should make it clear to her that she has to pay for those damages. If she wont..seek further legal action. Second, put up "no trespassing" signs on your property Third, call animal control and/or your local law enforcement and get this latest incident in writing to establish a paper trail of the dogs' behavior in case it happens again. The owners are liable for any damage done to your property and livestock.Other domestic pets are included as being 'property'.More than likely the LEOs will talk to your aunt and warn her to keep her dogs at bay.Do this EVERY time the dogs harass your animals or come onto your property...continuity of the paper trail. After X number of complaints of the dogs' dangerous behavior the LEOs and animal control are obligated to investigate and or seize the animals and fine the owner. Fourth, if you live in the country and thus can discharge firearms legally outside the city limits, I would get a good shotgun with some birdshot in it.It will definitely get the dogs' attention but wont do them any lasting harm.If that doesnt hinder them and the behavior continues, then get a good handgun (if they're that close in proxemity) or rifle and kill them.period. I dont know how things work in your state, but in TX any tresspasser (human) or animal that is on your property w/o permission and is damaging, stealing etc. your property you have the right to use force and or/deadly force depending on the situation to protect your property and your/your family's life...keep in mind, behavior like this has a way of escalating...what if they attack your daughter next? The local dogs who were chasing our mares and trying to mess with their foals ended up with a bullet in them.Yes,they were probably someone's pet,but our livestock and their vet bills (if mauled) are expensive and worth more than the mutt's life if their owner doesnt keep them at home and off of our property. All of our neighbors have a standing agreement that if any of their dogs or ours end up on someone else's property and damages or tries to damage their livestock then each person has full permission from the others to shoot them.It sounds cruel, but being a country family, you learn quick how expensive livestock, vet bills and fence repair adds up to.Its not that hard to train a dog to stay on your own property,so if you want to keep your pet, train them to stay put. sorry if my advice and views sound harsh, but thats my $.02 from personal experience.good luck.
