What Memory Stands Out?

Recommended Posts

As the one where you done something that was out of the ordinary simply for the hell/rush of it.

When you realised to yourself that sometimes walking on the edge is fun.

For me it was when i was 14 and a charity bungee came into town, fuck charity i wanted to jump! I pushed down on the table to get my weight up to jumpable and my certificate is made out to "Andrew Tasker" after getting some false parents to let me jump.

Not being content with just jumping i asked the dude if i could backflip off the crane instead of fall.

Oh and to all you DZ.commers: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Time to do the family routine :)

It wasn't when I did something, but looking back it foretold what was to come...

My dad ran the SSA (Soaring Society of America) for 20 years...the USPA for glider pilots. I used to hang around the airport when I would go visit him, and I remember when I was maybe 8, the first time I saw a parachute in person. It was an emergency rig, but I didn't know the difference. I asked his friend if she ever jumped out with it, and she said, "no, because if I did, that would mean that I would lose my glider." I thought it sounded like a fair trade, so I said, "well, yeah...but it would be really fun." I thought it was about the coolest idea that I had ever heard of. It makes me smile to think back and realise that this has been in me for a long long time.

My parents knew I had a facination with this sort of stuff, so they made 3 rules, that I would never skydive, never bungee jump, and never own a motorcycle. We see how that worked out...

One of my greatest memories of childhood was watching my Dad do his last skydive. I was about 6 years old, we lived in Wyoming at the time. On the way back from visiting the family in Colorado we stopped in at some DZ, he got on a load. I remember watching all the parachutes open and looking for may Dad.

I keep trying to get him back into the sport, but he claims that he is too busy for this nonsense.

He used to jump with a super8 movie camera on his helmet, and has some interesting footage of skydiving in the old days.
The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
