sundevil777 102 #1 December 27, 2006 ...people doing office work in dark rooms, strobe effect, extreme facial close ups, only 1/2 of a the face on the screen, and some others that I'll think of later - I HATE these director gimmicks. Why is it that directors think this crap improves their films/shows? You can also find it in commercials, sporting events, etc. Why would I want a shot to be jittery? I could understand if an earthquake was happening in the story. It might give some people motion sickness, for me it is just really irritating. Why would seeing (lighting up) only 1/2 of a person's face be an improvement? You know that it must take some effort to prevent light from reflecting and spoiling the desired effect. It is amazing how many Hollywood productions portray people working in very dimly lit office environments. I've seen police interrogation rooms, with a suspect being brow-beaten by the detectives, with almost no light in the room! I suppose this is the opposite strategy to the bright lights in the face to break down a suspect stereotype - being questioned in a dimly lit room would be much worse torture! Sporting events will often use extreme facial close ups. Not just a tight shot, but a person's mouth/eye/nose being the only thing filling your screen - WHY? I don't want to get that close to anyone I'm not going to bed with. I am at a loss to explain why a facial shot with 1/2 the face out of frame is a modern technique worth persisting. I wonder if there is an advocacy group lobbying directors to stop doing this shit. Of course this is all rather silly complaining, it isn't really that important to me, but I'm interested to see how many others have noticed and hate it. I do enjoy watching quality movies, and I think these gimmicks have no value and distract from my enjoyment of the story. Perhaps if less effort were expended to achieve 1/2 lit faces, they could devote themselves to making the acting/story better.People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

sundevil777 102 #4 December 27, 2006 The swaying is probably to cover up the awful acting by a bunch of amateurs. For some reason the history channel type of shows MUST show a small group of actors pretending to be Visigoths/whatever, portraying the most trivial acts such as marching, and of course pretend battles, etc. I'd rather them show old paintings/drawings that depict the history, or even just a person talking than amateur dipshits doing an awful job of acting. I also hate bright flashes of light between camera shots.People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Perhaps all the directors have come to the conclusion these gimmicks keep people from turning the channel by hypnotizing the viewer. Kinda like MTV - no camera shot should ever be still or last more than one second, lots of flashing lights...People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Samurai136 0 #7 December 27, 2006 Strobe FX are a bit irritating. My personal pet peeves: 1. slow motion (time expansion/ contraction) FX 2. jump cuts showing one event (explosion) from 15 different POV's"Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken
