NWFlyer 2 #2 January 25, 2007 Start here. The articles by Lisa Briggs are particularly helpful for new jumpers."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
dragon2 2 #3 January 25, 2007 I bought mine at 50 jumps, over here 30-80 jumps is where people buy their stuff, but we have a lot of gear at the store to downsize/demo. Wait untill you are sure what you want, which canopies, which sizes. Generally people buy 2nd hand first because you'll probably downsize fairly quickly and also you would not like to get your shiny gear dirty because you can't land on your feet 100% of the time yet. Best to buy other things first, like alti, helmet, suit. Check out the other beginer gear threads, there are links there to some very useful articles you would be smart to read (I'm too lazy to look 'm up now ). ciel bleu, Saskia
Dougjumper 0 #4 January 25, 2007 Usually used until you get some experience under your belt. I would go with the advice of your AFF Instructor. Have Him or Her help you with fitting correct sizes etc. Sometimes you can get new for price of used it just all depends. From my own experience and been in this sport 13yrs Id say if you purchase used have it checked by a Master rigger just to be on the safe side. Ms.sofaking 0 #5 January 25, 2007 I would say it depends on your finances.Renting gear can get pretty expensive at some DZs.If you buy gear you don't think you'll have for long. Consider the resale value.Sometimes times spending a little more can be worth it if you can sell it for the same or slightly less than you paid for it.That was the advice I got."I'm not sure how it's going to turn out, except I'll die in the end, she said. So what could really go wrong? -----Brian Andreas

I bought my own gear when my buddies pushed me to do it. One day a friend told me: " jump my chute. I am selling it!" I did not jump it and do not know why. I got the money, a discount and bought it. He also gave me 3 free pro-packing classes, 2 videos and a book I jumped it and got the best opening I have ever had. It was also my first pro-packing and I had packed it all by my self Then I packed my chute, watched the video and read my book every day for a while. Of course, I lost my girlfriend but love my chute! Advice: Buy it when you feel you are ready and ask for advice here before purchasing!Gonzalo It cannot be done really means I do not know how to do it ... yet

It depends on what your situation is. At my home DZ which only had Sky Master 295s to rent for $25 a jump I could have thrown my first rig in the dumpster after 70 jumps and come out ahead financially. If you can jump smaller canopies for a more reasonable sum ($25/day?) you might wait longer and buy something smaller.
