Okay, went to Pacific Skydiving (thanks to the dropzone listings here in dz.com) and clicked on 'staff'. cpoxon 0 #28 October 2, 2006 From http://kgmb9.com/kgmb/display.cfm?storyID=9299 QuoteShawn Lym and his skydive instructor, Tim Straus, have jumped together eight times before. Today was Lym's first time by himself and with his own gear. But it didn't go as planned. The problem started when he pulled his chute at 5,000 feet. "The main chute came out and the reserve chute came out at the same time," Lym said. "But it didn't open. It was just trailing behind me. It was wrapped around my leg." Lym says he was finally able to unwrap the chute from his leg, but he had two parachutes open - a dangerous situation. "Tim, my instructor, told me over the radio to cut the main chute away," Lym said. "Then the reserve chute was twisted up and just flapped in the wind all the way down until we hit the water." For 3,000 feet, the distance of three World Trade Centers, Lym spun out of control. He says he hit the water going about 50 miles an hour. He survived, he says, because of his instructor's advice to point his feet. "My first thought coming out of the water was 'I went in just right!'" Lym said. "Then I took a big gulp of water and was gagging, and then my instructor swam out and dragged me in." "When I landed, I took my equipment off," Straus said. "I jumped in the ocean and spent about 45 minutes in the ocean, helped my bro out, and I was glad he was okay. And when we got in, everybody's gear was there but mine." That's right. While Straus was in the ocean helping to save his student, somebody stole his skydiving gear, which was worth $6,000. "I will give you $100 no questions asked," he said. "I just want my gear back." So after his student's skydiving scare, Straus is the one that had a bad day. In fact, Lym skydived again, just 20 minutes later. His only injury? His thumb. It's really bad that gear was stolen but this story is really confusing. It's probably just down to whuffo journalism and a student's excitement at cheating death.Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

ltdiver 3 #31 October 4, 2006 QuoteShameless bump any info on donations yet ? Still waiting to hear from someone who knows him, who has the complete story. Sending out a request: Can someone who knows Tim contact his home DZ and see what the status of his rig is, and what is his need? I'd do it, but since I don't know Tim he might not respond. Thanks ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
gjhdiver 0 #32 October 4, 2006 Not much I can do, but I could have a word with my sponsors, Wings, PD and Argus to see if I can get him cost on new stuff. If others chip in, we could get him new gear cheap.

Regardless of what you or I might do, the point is, that part of the island is nearly as bad as the Waipahu and Waianae are seriously infested drug areas, and Mokuleia isn't a whole lot better. Hawaii is the Ice capital of the USA, and is one of the top meth states. Crime is rampant in certain areas. You can't leave ANYTHING laying around. I work there quite regularly, and have seen or heard about all sorts of theft of even silly little things like blankets, towels, shoes, sunglasses, whatever...while the owner was only a few feet away. Someone attempted to steal my rental Harley; only the disc lock prevented it. And that was in a heavily trafficked parking lot, in front of a major mall. I'm sure the person that stole the rig isn't a skydiver. I'm equally sure it's a user that saw opportunity regardless of what it was, and took it. Back to point, I'd like to help Tim out. I started skydiving at Mokuleia, they're a great bunch of people there.
skymama 37 #39 October 4, 2006 QuoteI talked toTim today. His gear has not been returned. Please find out if he has a Paypal account or someway he can accept donations from people. If so, I'll see if HH will let me make the post a sticky for a few days. Also, find out what kind of gear he had. Maybe we can also get our kind vendors who post here to offer him a discount. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
RandomLemming 0 #40 October 4, 2006 If someone does manage to find a way to donate for replacement gear, I'm good for some cash. I've had some good instructors and I'd hate to see any of them ever get ripped off like this. Skydiving is hard enough for a n00b, and good people need to be encouraged because without the good ones, many people wouldn't have stuck with the sport! I have even had friends who had their apartment robbed and they lived on the 5th floor, the thieves scaled the outside of the building in order to go in through the window that was not covered by a metal shutter.
