Computer help please: 2nd internal hard drive hassle

Recommended Posts

The 2nd drive is there and working properly when I check it under Device Manager, but it isn't there when I open the My Computer folder.

That seems very strange, I hope someone might have an idea to help me.

I've checked and rechecked that I installed the jumpers on the 2 drives correctly, and tried all the manual/auto settings possible in the BIOS for slave/master, etc.

I've followed all the instructions carefully, but no change. I'm running Windows XP home edition.

I might just get an enclosure for it and use it as an external drive, this is so frustrating.

Oh boy here we go again.
Dood, MAC.
Go Linux.
Hell, I might even learn something. Naw.

Thanks, with help from Walt and ypelchat, I realized how to format it. It is strange that the instructions said nothing about the need for that. I asked when I bought it, and they also said it shouldn't require formatting. Oh well, now I'm good to go.

Thanks again.

It's a while since I did anything like this, but perhaps you need to format it, or at least partition it before use. Windows will not recognize an "invalid" partition (or no partition at all)

Yeah, exactly what I would think... To see what partitions you have on the drive, simply right click on "My Computer" icon on your desktop, then go to Manage --> Disk Management. On the right side you will see the list of disks, and how the space is allocated on them. If you don't have any partitions on your second drive, or if your partition(s) are not formatted (i.e. there is no file system that you can access), you'll need to do some work. Should be pretty simple and self-explanatory from there, but let me know if you have any problems -- I'll walk you through.

Edit: Duh! Too late... ;)
