willard 0 #8 January 6, 2007 You mean like a cross between a BMW and a Hummer is a Bummer? Seriously, though, they are a step in the right direction from an environmental standpoint, but they have a long way to go before they have a substantial impact. Icon134 0 #14 January 6, 2007 Quoteor when getting hit by a Hummer.I disagree... this vehicle would probably manage just fine agains a Hummer... http://www.gm.com/company/gmability/adv_tech/300_hybrids/fact_hybrid_bus.html or these http://www.gm.com/company/gmability/adv_tech/300_hybrids/fact_pickup_trucks.html in general I think hybrids are a good idea. ultimately the dea behind the hybrid concept is to improve the effeciency of the vehicles and as an engineer I like the idea of an efficient system.Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... Evelyn 0 #15 January 6, 2007 I LOVE hybrid cars. My husband and I both have Toyota Prius cars. What I love most about the Prius is the diamond lane stickers. I have a long commute to work, but with the diamond lane my commute is much easier. The 40+ mpg is nice too. Some people think we've gone green since we own two hybrid cars, but the RV and my Vette kind of cancel that out . SkydiverTilt 0 #18 January 6, 2007 Anyone who pays $24,000 to save $500 in gas every year deserves one. Just think, in 48 years the damn thing pays for itself!!! Geez...I LOVE MARKETING!!!!!!!! Evelyn 0 #20 January 7, 2007 I paid only $15,000 for my used Prius (20,00 miles). It was worth it for me to have the diamond lane stickers so I can use the car pool lane for my commute. My husband paid $28,000 for his 2006 Prius, but he gets a $3,000 rebate on taxes. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing ~ Helen Keller
Icon134 0 #21 January 7, 2007 QuoteAnyone who pays $24,000 to save $500 in gas every year deserves one. Just think, in 48 years the damn thing pays for itself!!!Fist I'm going to Caveat this with the fact that I don't in fact own a Hybrid Vehicle. for the sake of argument I'll pick the Honda Civic and lets compare three of the Honda Civics: Civic Hybrid @ $22,600 MSRP Civic Sedan (LX trim, i.e. middle) @ $17,760 MSRP and the Civic Si Sedan @ $21,290 MSRP by your arguement of saving $500/year the savings actually start to occur much sooner... $22,600 -$17,760 $4,840 therefore after 9 years of ownership the car is more cost effective then the LX version car. And is more cost effective after 2 years then the Si... Now this does assume that the maintence costs are similar... which isn't exactly a safe arguement. of course... I'd probably get the Si for the sportiness of it... or possibly the Sedan EX... though I've actually decided that I'm not keen on actually buying a new car again. of course I'm just arguing for arguements sake... that and to demonstrate that its not as simple an arguement as you've made it out to be.Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... Just looked up that stuff in the last 10 minutes (crunched the numbers then and there) just trying to make the point that its not all marketing. Like I said before... the logic for creating/using a hybrid vehicle is to improve the efficiency of the process. You can't completely elminate energy use (think perpetual motion machine) but if you can improve the process by 25% awesome. There are certainly other issuse involved... we have lighter cars today because they used a lot of plastics but many of the plastics that are used cost more to manufacture/recycle/dispose of but the cost savings over the life of the vehicle balances out the upfront and tail end costs.Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... bloody_trauma 2 #24 January 7, 2007 well youve got that, and in states like texas and cali you get a tax break for PZEV's and you get to use the special lanes like she was saying for free.Fly it like you stole it

I'm still having more fun with my Si than I would with a hybrid though. I have the coupe model and I did not pay MSRP. No one should pay MSRP. I'm all for the fuel efficiency and I believe we're headed in that direction. The vehicle cost is what is keeping consumers away.
