Lindercles 0 #1 January 8, 2007 Dozens of dead birds were discovered in downtown Austin this morning, causing most of the area to be shut down. Clicky. QuoteCongress Avenue from Cesar Chavez to 11th street as well as one block on either side of Congress are closed until noon. Authorities are trying to figure how dozens of dead birds ended up near the state Capitol. The birds were discovered overnight in downtown Austin. Crews did check for any gas leaks or other chemicals earlier, but nothing was found. The Austin Fire Department suggests that if you work in the affected area, you wait until they've given the "all clear" before going in. All Congress Avenue Capital Metro routes are being detoured to San Jacinto and Brazos. Of course, my workplace is just barely outside of the shut down area. The building right next door to me is shut down, but mine isn't. So if you don't hear from me for a while, it's probably because I contracted avian flu. NWFlyer 2 #3 January 8, 2007 Are they sure it's not some kind of bizarre political statement given the proximity to the Capitol? Lindercles 0 #5 January 8, 2007 Nobody seems to be sure of anything at this point. I've heard a lot of speculation (that's what people do, after all) and the prevailing theory seems to be that someone poisoned them. The fact that the legislative session starts tomorrow may or may not have anything to do with it as well. The story has already made CNN, as well as several major newspapers. We're all interested to find out what the heck it was. And I just realized, this is going to put a serious damper on my lunch.

So this morning we've got a strange odor permeating Manhattan and a few dozen dead birds in Austin. That's interesting. On a side note, this hazmat suit itches like a mother fucker. Lindercles 0 #8 January 8, 2007 The Reuters headline reads "Parts of Texas capital closed after dead birds found." And they continually refer to the "capital" throughout the article. Way to go Reuters. Oh, and LM, I know they're opening back up an noon, but what are the chances that any restaurants will actually be prepared to serve food at noon? Sucky McSuck, methinks. The spelling in the article is correct because it's referring to the capital city, not the capitol building. I don't have an M.D. or a law degree. I have bachelor's in kicking ass and taking names. FlyingJ 0 #18 January 13, 2007 QuoteThe story has already made CNN, as well as several major newspapers. We're all interested to find out what the heck it was. This made for a much better day for me! We were burning about 500 acres on a city preserve and in the past burning in that area has resulted in piles of media attention, which means tons of people showing up at the site of the fire and getting in the way. This little mess with the birds kept the media busy and we just fired away with no interruption! The people assigned to go deal with media if they showed up never even had to be called off the fire!Killing threads since 2004.
