happythoughts 0 #1 January 15, 2007 Disclaimer - not the skydiving short that was the basis for the FJC in Fandango. (Which was awesome) The other movie with G. Paltrow in it. I rented that this weekend. I liked it. I thought of this though. Math, art, creativity. All that stuff is related. However, people that are into math and dress in an eclectic, personal fashion are called nerds and geeks. People into art will spike their hair and do whatever is the fashion for individualists who want to dress like everyone else. However, that is cool. Why are their no "art geeks" ? Aren't the real individualists the ones who are actually more self-absorbed in their interests ? I think it is the shopping thing. Being able to "buy cool". Buy enough black clothes and you are a Goth and reject conformity by dressing like other Goths.
willard 0 #2 January 15, 2007 Hmmmmm.....I see what you mean. I think. Kinda like tattoos used to be a way for people to express their individualism. Now it seems like everybody has one and now when I go into a bar or club i am the unique person in the room because I don't have a tatt.

Women get the little rose on their ankle for that feminine, dainty look. Skinny geeks get the tribal on their biceps to look fierce. It's just saying "something". Harley figured it out long ago. They are the only company where the customer gets a permanent tattoo of the company logo. Buying the bike is one thing, a company tattoo is an identity crisis. People skydive for 50 reasons. Adrenaline, challenge, competition, identity. Identifying with the danger is one of them. In the movie, the central reward for being an academic was the personal challenge. In a way, they are not following the typical path. The recognition came from their peers, not from the general public. While it may be more satisfying, it is more difficult socially, and we all live in the world.
unformed 0 #4 January 15, 2007 People who don't do something for the sole reason that it is trendy are even more of posers than if they had just done it in the first place. As I grew up, I realized being an individual doesn't necessarily mean being different. Sometimes things are popular for a reason. Think for yourself and decide if it's worth it.This ad space for sale.
