AggieDave 6 #1 January 22, 2007 For everyday shaving? I bring this up due to having once again found a good traditional barber. One who uses a straight razor and hot lather to clean up the edges and neck after a haircut. So I've just spent the last hour reading about how to use a straight razor correctly, what kind to get, how to care for it, etc and thought "I don't think I know anyone that actually uses one" and was curious if anyone did. All in all it looks very intriguing, but the cost for a proper shaving setup is quite expensive at the onset (which would be quickly off set when compared to the 14-blade Gilette Mach 14 razor cartridge cost).--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." FlyingJ 0 #2 January 22, 2007 That's one thing I miss about my barber in NYC. My hair just gets cut with clippers, and for most of my life I have done it myself, but I loved this guy so much I always went to him while I lived there. The hot lather and shave with the razor was the best part. Juan "Johnny" Diaz on Columbus btw (I think) 57th and 58th for anyone up in that neighborhood.Killing threads since 2004. livendive 8 #6 January 22, 2007 The last place I went for haircuts used a straight razor for shaves and neck/edges. The place I go now just uses power Mach 3's (with free clean-ups between cuts). I use the same for every day shaving...a straight razor is just too much trouble for a shave that isn't much closer. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" Damn...I didn't think ANYONE did the razor cleanup anymore.... I don't use a straight, but I do use a double-edge and mug soap/brush. One advantage of a cartridge (or disposable) is that you don't hardly have to worry about blade angle, where you do with a straight or DE.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. Zenister 0 #9 January 22, 2007 did while i was in college (and absolutely nutty about all things edged) but tbh it takes far to much time (more time than i have generally for toiletries) but i did enjoy having an 'old school' barber while i was stationed in FL, who used one as a matter of course. in fact my entire detachment was regulars there after the 1SGT continually praised my hair cuts.. plus it was one of the more relaxing parts of the week for me..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. Squeak 17 #10 January 22, 2007 My barber (in fact all the barbers I've been to) use a straight razor for cleanups, and shaves. I however would never consider using a straight razor myself, man the ammount of blood would be huge. Tonto 1 #11 January 22, 2007 QuoteFor everyday shaving? My former brother-in-law is a dentist. In the days we were still in a team together he shaved every day with a straight razor. Felt if his hand wasn't steady - he should be the 1st to know. This rubbed off on the team for a while and we all did it for a couple of months, but it simply wasn't worth the bother for me. Its so easy to cut your self with both straight razors and double sided razors, Safety Razors rock I've nicked myself a couple times, but I've nicked myself with disposables like the Sensor as well. I'm guessing that's what you mean by 'safety razor', since the double edge razor (like Grandpa's, with the disposable blade) is what is actually called a safety razor. I've actually had LESS razor burn with the DE than with the disposables - it definitely a different set of reflexes, though - push against your face with a DE like you would with a disposable, and you'll definitely not have a happy face!Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. cocheese 0 #16 January 22, 2007 If it has 3 or more blades it's a straight razor. If it has a wide pink handle, then it's a gay razor.
Stumpy 284 #17 January 22, 2007 No - but i would vote for double edge. Sometimes i oversleep and need to shave in a hurry. Do that with a safety/DE razor and you might nick yourself, do it with a cutthroat and it might just live up to its name..... AggieDave 6 #18 January 22, 2007 I haven't had a chance to ask about the shaving, I've only been there twice and was clean shaven both times. freakflyer9999 1 #19 January 23, 2007 I still use a shaving mug, brush and soap, but not a straight razor. I just cut myself too much, so I gave up and now use twin blade disposables.
