Urban Legends

Recommended Posts

What are some of the old urban legends you grew up with? I don't mean current urban legends - photoshopped photographs, Microsoft is tracking this email and will pay you if you forward it to a billion and two people, etc etc. I mean oldschool urban legends - ghostly hitchhikers, bloody Mary that you could recreate in the school bathroom and freak out your friends with, or a local favorite, La Llorona. Any skydiving urban legends?

I'm taking a class on Urban Legends right now. It looks to be really interesting. I've always been a scaredycat though when it comes to creepy stories - too many times being the butt of someones urban legend comes to life joke. :P

Anyway as a result of my wussiness, I've distanced myself from urban legends, but need to research some for this class. Any personal favorites?

Some of the local urban legends from where I grew up were the BEST.

Some were, like other urban legends, based a bit in fact.

Firstly, there was one that there were ICBM missle sites in the farm fields around my town. Which was due to having one of the larger TIs (Texas Instruments) in the town. Come to find out there were Nike and Herculies missile sites in the general area (near Denton) and up near the red river. This was protection for Carswell AFB in Ft Worth.

Secondly, there was a long held belief that a pagen cult had bought a large local structure called "Woodmen's Circle" and used it for occult practices. It was known that it used to be an orphan's home/nursing home, but the more modern history was less known. This website lays it out pretty well. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgrayso/woodmen.html

Of course there's stories of catfish the size of compact cars near the Denison Dam's intakes on Lake Texoma. Every large freshwater lake have stories like that. Then again, world record catfish have been found on that lake http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/c/catfish.htm

WRT the Internet, the oldest story I know that might be called an Urban Legend was the "Kremvax Hoax". Ironically, it later became fact, but due to the original hoax, many people initially didn't believe it. Google for it.

I love urban legends....the guy in the back of the car.....the man upstairs in the house terrorizing the babysitter on the phone. Eating poprocks and soda can make you explode! What a cool class:)
