The Pain of Breaking an Addiction

Recommended Posts

Physical pain, I mean. AYEE. :(

I didn't mean to go caffeine-free today...it just happened that I was wrapped up in phone calls and stuff, so I didn't brew my typical morning pot o' coffee.

By noon, the headache started. But I thought, 'Hey! This isn't so bad! I can just skip the coffee!' :)
By 1pm I was lying down to try to help it...

By 2pm I was trying to get my mommy to stop talking on the phone because it hurt...

By 3pm I was reaching for Tylenol, but decided against it...

It's 4pm and I have the coffee pot brewing. One cup should do it I hope! Just one cup...

I typically drink 10 cups of coffee per day. I know, that's a ridiculous amount, but remember I don't get 4 hours of sleep at any one given time ever...

What addicition did you break? How long before the symptoms went away? (I have heard it's about 3 days)

10 cups!!!!! Yeech, woman! No wonder you were not doing so hot! Cripes!

I am trying to kill my sweets addiction. It's not going well. Had a butterfinger today. I am unable to concentrate on anything after lunch unless I get my sweets.

THAT is harder for me than coffee; even at 10 cups a day. I think maybe the one problem feeds off the other? I have no evidence of that, but I swear there must be some kind of link between sugar and caffeine...when I try to get rid of one, the craving for the other gets stronger.

Have you ever tried exercising as soon as you get up? It's hard at first, but I swear that really helps me get going for the day. I still drink coffee, but not that much. Ten cups has gotta be bad for your health!

I will start doing that to help me with my fitness plans starting...February 1st! :)
My doc said 10 cups a day is out of control...:S In the army our civilian Ops guy Smitty used to drink a station pot every night. -The station pot was about 24 cups. :|B|

I used to drink 2.5 to 3 POTS of coffee every day. At the time, I was also smoking 30 cigarettes a day. And I wondered why my stomach was alwasy upset. Hahaha. :S

Anyhoo, cutting down my coffee intake to only 2 - 3 cups a day (where I'm at now) wasn't a big deal. I just drank a little less each day. Quitting smoking, on the other hand, that was a bitch. I couldn't think, I was grumpy all the time, I even DREAMED about smoking. Eventally all that went away. Interestingly, really intense cardio workouts give me a high similar to the relief I felt from smoking. If it wasn't for that, I don't think I ever woulda quit. :)

I don't know how you can do that.

My husband can do that, I cannot. First, it involves getting up earlier. Second, I have PF (plantar faciitis) in my feet, it takes a lot of moving around to get them to warm up. No thanks.

I should go walk right now. Ha! I am sitting on the couch waiting on a kitty to come snuggle with me and I am working!

Interesting...I quit smoking (other than the occasional social smoke whilest drinking = 1x every other month) much easier than giving up sugar or caffeine.

I was down to 1 smoke per day, then thought 'why bother?'

My doctor at the time told me to replace my smoking time with something else. I did! I started writing. I wrote about 374 pages into a novel. :|

I still haven't finished that damn book and it's 4 years old now!

Well, starting at age 12, I had to be ready for a 1 1/2 hour workout in a pool every weekday morning before school. I guess I learned to just get up and go. I'm very chipper in the morning. It drives most people crazy.

Fast foods. I use to love eating fast food. But I have promised myself to stay away from them. I still go to a resturant like Logan's Steak House, but no more McDonald's or Burger King for me. I also think the hardest thing is the Krispy Kreme donuts. Oh, I can taste it right now.[:/]
If I stand on my tip toes, I can see the weekend from here!

I don't usually tell people this but if it will help someone else then it was worth it.

I got in a motorcycle accident a couple years back. They pumped me full of morphine and sent me home with a months supply of perkocet. After they ran out I felt like shit, (withdarwls). I went a couple weeks before I realize that I loved the way I felt when I had opiates in me so I spent the next two years hunting down pain killers. As most of you know, the high goes away and it takes more and more to get you feeling the high. I'm sure I spent thousands. I now am clean and sober and happy about it.

It was a hard road for about the first month. I was flu like sick for a week and after that lots of anxiety and hot and cold flashes. Depression is the long term side effect but I can beat that. It's better than hunting down pills.

Life is good these days, I just can't wait to start jumping regularly. That's the best drug there is!

Don't do it that way!!! Pain is bad!!!

Start by replacing one cup of coffee with a glass of water. After a couple of days, replace another cup of coffee with a glass of water. Etc...

I never made it to completely caffeine free, but I did reduce my intake from 4-8 cups of coffee and 6-12 diet Cokes per day to 2 or 3 cups of coffee per day with no headaches.

I broke the smokeless tobacco addiction over 9 yrs ago and also quit coffee at the same time.....talk about life sucking then! :(

Actually quit all caffeine first and about 4 months later quit the chew!...........was easier that way.

I'm back to coffee now, but only 2 cups a day......B|

I started smoking at age 12... Still trying to kick it... Last smoke I had was Monday morning at like 4:47 approx.;)). Drinking is what always pulls me back into smoking... every time I quit, it's a beer that gets me smoking again.>:(

3 days is about right for the most of it. The biggest part to break was for when I was driving. When stuck in traffic out here in California, I used to chain-smoke. Now I always keep a bag of pumpkin seeds in my truck to replace the craving.

I hear that an apple in the morning can give more of a get-up-and-go effect than a cup of coffee can. You may want to try that.
Some people refrain from beating a dead horse. Personally, I find a myriad of entertainment value when beating it until it becomes a horse-smoothie.

I will definitely do that today.

I am starting the day with a cup of coffee, just because I think I might be able to have one cup at 8am, maybe one cup at noon, and one at about 4pm to help that headache.

And FWIW, a mug of coffee is usually quite a bit more than a cup, unfortunately...(I forgot that when I started drinking this) -so I think I will actually measure out a cup for my noon and 4pm drinks.

I'll slam one o' them down whilest dropping my Sprouty off to school. Thanks for the tip! :)
I bet the fiber will keep me from needing to eat fattening stuff the rest of the morning, too.

About 5 years ago my doctor told me I had to quit drinking coffee because of a medication he was putting me on (combined with caffeine it can cause heart palpitations). At the time I would drink 1 large mocha on the way to work, 4 jumbo cups of coffee while in the office, and 2 espressos’ when I got home. (Probably equivalent to your 10 cups a day). The doctor joked and told me not to quit cold turkey, but to cut it down to zero.... HA :D:P

I started drinking water instead of coffee.... I'd have an occasional cup of coffee / or tea, but having water helped tremendously. Now, I rarely drink coffee during the weekdays mostly green tea and water. However Saturday and Sundays I MUST have a cup or two.

If I don't have actual apples, I always have apple juice to chug down... (I go for the non-concentrate stuff... it's expensive but tastes 1000x's better)

I already have heart palp's...part of the reason my doc was telling me to knock it off with the caffeine! :D

You know, on a funny side note, in the sci-fi novel I started writing back in 2003, most of the human population is addicted to coffee. :o:D

Good for you!

I gave up daily drinking about 14 years ago. I still have some drinks at parties (like SuperBowl this weekend!) but that's about it.

I am the rare person that gave up a LOT of drinking and smoking and can enjoy them now and then. I'm very fortunate that way.

Caffeine withdrawl is miserable:(....makes you irritable, gives you a headache, nausea, inability to concentrate to name a few. From what I understand, symptoms peak at about 48 hours but can last up to a week or longer. Go to caffeinedependence.org...they have some good info on what to expect.

I see this happen to people all of the time - work in er- and hate to see the people who come in 50 times a year get more hydrocodone (which is the most prescribed narcotic in the US) - thanks for sharing this with people:)

Wow, I didn't realize that nausea was a withdrawal symptom...I thought I felt like puking yesterday because the headache was so bad!

Thanks for the link. :)
