Why the HELL does it have to happen right now?!? He could easily get out of it for hardship with 2 highly disabled sons, but he wouldn't do that.~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. He's home now...he was supposed to retire in 87 days. Now his unit was just notified a few hours ago of deployment within a few months. If they go on alert before day 87, he's stop-lossed and can't get out.~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. Luckily he was able to retire before having to deploy to Iraq. He's tough, but do we really want to semd senior citizens to fight wars? I hope he is able to get out. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.
ACMESkydiver 0 #15 January 29, 2007 QuoteAre you really surprised? No, not really. We were actually expecting something like this to happen a year or two ago. To happen when he is just 87 (86 today!) days short is just such a gut shot, y'know? QuoteHell, my dad was stop-lossed, and he was pushing 60! SkymonkeyONE 4 #16 February 2, 2007 Is he in the guard or reserves and just getting out or something? You cannot retire with less than 20 years of active duty, but you said he has 15. If he IS a guardsman or reservist, is he AGR or just a "regular", drilling soldier? Either way, if that's what he wants, then congratulate him for me. ACMESkydiver 0 #17 February 2, 2007 He was 6 years active. Ranger. One year off. Nadda, enjoyed being a civilian. Changed his mind and joined the reserves; back as a legal NCO (same as in Ranger Bat.) Is getting out at 15 total years...and in the past, you could 'retire' at 15 years. I know because two of my station chiefs did. Retirement benefits and all. That was when the army was downsizing..about 1994-5. You are correct that he can't draw an army retirement with only 15 years in at this time...they stopped doing the retirement benefits at 15 years a long time ago. We could give a sh*t about retirement benefits though, y'know? They are sucking worse every time you look at 'em. -but if you notice about 5 or 6 posts into the thread, it might be a moot point anyway. I am still hoping he can at least get the hell out of dodge...but some not-so-great news a couple of days ago is making that chance look bleak. Thanks for your 21+ years. Rock on. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
SkymonkeyONE 4 #18 February 2, 2007 Yes, there was a short while where there was a 15 year retirement/buyout offered to active duty troops. The "real" retirement pay rate for that was only 35% of base pay. The lump sum they offered was pathetic (like $120k lump sum or something). I only know two people that asked for and were accepted for it. The available window for that was hidden from Special Forces troops until there were only 30 days left when the word got out. Even then, there were only five packets total in the entirety of Special Forces (CMF 18) which got accepted. It was laughable. My boss for one of my military contracts (with Northrop Grumman) is one of those five. Chuck
