Vallerina 2 #1 February 2, 2007 Yes, I know there are millions of threads and pics and blah blah blah. All I have to say is that I am freaking frustrated!!!!! In the past when I've been able to find my motivation, I've never really had a problem losing weight. Now, it's just impossible. No, I haven't hit a plateau, and no, it's not "those last ten pounds for looks." I really don't feel my best at this weight (and I don't want to buy new clothes.) Over the past three or four weeks, I've been eating about 1500 calories a day during the week and 2500 on the weekends (eating more vegetables than I really care to). I run 2-3 miles 5 or 6 times a week, do some kickboxing and some weight training here and there. When I hopped on the scale after noticing that my fat pants do not fit any differently, the scale had not changed from when I was eating too much and not working out enough during study/holiday season. I think I'm doing everything right (even torturing myself by drinking 80 oz of water a day.) When I did all of this crap before, I lost weight and felt much better fast. (Even during the winter....so I don't buy that excuse.) So, what does one do when the magical "eat less, move more" theory is not working? I didn't expect a huge change over just a few weeks, but some sort of a change would be nice. wildfan75 1 #3 February 2, 2007 Stay with it!!!! You might have hit a plateau. This too shall pass. The other option is that you might be building more muscle than you are losing fat. Muscle weighs twice as much as fat. Keep that in mind. Just stay with it!!!! And don't think of it as a bad thing that you're not losing anymore weight. Look at is as a good thing that you're keeping yourself healthy! I'd rather be the way I am (which is far from a size 2) than worry about walking outside on a windy day. Not everyone can be model thin. Keep it up girl!!!! You're healthier for doing every little and big thing that you do! (I know, easier said than done). I doubt it's a plateau since I was pigging out and being lazy around the holidays and then got back into an eating healthy/exercise routine. sartre 0 #15 February 2, 2007 Don't give up don't give up don't give up!!!! When I first joined the gym a couple of years ago, I actually gained weight. It took months for the scale to look different, or for my clothes to fit differently, but within just a few weeks other people commented that I looked more fit. Just keep up the good work. I promise, it WILL click.
 SarahC07 0 #16 February 2, 2007 As much as you probably don't want to hear this... weight watchers really works. At 5'3 (and less than 140 lbs) I'm eating between 1200-1350 calories on days that I don't work out. Closer to 1500-1600 on days that I do 40 minutes of low impact cardio. And I do a complete upper body strength training program. I'm 21 and my metabolism is hella slow. I lose about 1 to 1.5 pounds a week when I eat and workout this way. Weight watchers, it works... I swear.
 NWFlyer 2 #17 February 2, 2007 Good to know there's no underlying problems. As someone who's been through a dramatic weight loss, I can tell you it's never linear, it often seems random and unrelated to how "good" or "bad" you're being. I'd lose weight in weeks that I had overindulged, and gain a pound or stay the same in weeks I'd been "good." It's also remarkable how sometimes a small change can seem the most dramatic. When I lost all the weight a few years back, I got comments, of course, throughout the first 100-110 lbs. But the last 15-20 lbs, which took almost as long to lose as the first big chunk, were almost the most dramatic in terms of just reshaping my body. All of a sudden my face got angular and I got collarbones! I would get comments like "wow you must have lost another 50 lbs" when I hadn't seen people for a few months, when I'd only lost 10 or 15. So stick with it... and hopefully one day you'll just get a random whoosh."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
 karenmeal 0 #18 February 2, 2007 Keep going!! It will start working. I am a numbers sort of person and when I am trying to get in shape, I love to keep track of a bunch of different numbers so that I can see how well I am doing. Sometimes one number (like the scale) won't reflect your hard work, but if you're tracking your waist measurements your sucess may show up there. You may consider going to get your body-fat percentage checked as well so that if in a month or so your weight has barely changed you can get your body-fat rechecked to see what has been going on. I am just starting out again, and I have told myself not to count on the scale and my clothes at first. I have to keep on moving. If you're still having no luck, I'd really suggest perhaps talking to a doctor. One thing a doc told me a long time ago, and I am just putting into effect now, is to watch the glycemic index of the foods I eat, and try not to go over '10'. He told me to calculate it like this: On food label, take total carbs per serving Subtract out the grams of fiber Subtract out the grams of protein If the remaining number is 10 or less, it's good to eat. Anyhoo, I am using that to make better choices. -I do have thyroid disease, so I know things are different for me, but thyroid isn't the only thing that will affect metabolism. Lower GI foods are supposed to be healthier for everyone. The one doc that gave me this told me he had an athlete in his office that could NOT lose the pudge around her tummy for anything...and he told her to EASE UP her workouts, and eat more calories per day...but lower GI foods.
