livendive 8 #7 February 9, 2007 I trust most sommeliers to open and pour for me, and to understand if there's a problem. As for selecting for me, it depends on the sommelier, the restaurant, the wine list, and the wine in question. 90% of the time I'm going to go with my own knowledge. Most of the other times it'll be trusting him to pick the best of a mediocre line-up. And few things are more irritating than a sommelier who perfectly fits the saying, "It's better to keep quiet and let people think you're stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." You had to request a sommelier while making your reservation? Maybe it's just me, but I haven't heard of such a practice so it doesn't seem to bode very well. Gato 0 #9 February 9, 2007 Sommeliers are salespeople just like waiters and waitresses. I worked at a 5-star place when I was in my 20s, and we always had one on fridays and saturdays, and I think we had 3 that would rotate in and out. I personally know a Master Sommelier (Doug Frost, KC), and I can tell you that no one becomes one without truly wanting to, and most of them are very excited about wines. They're also very into introducing folks to their favorites, which tend to be expensive, but not always. Sometimes you do meet the occaisional jerky wine snob, but most I've met are really cool people.T.I.N.S.
Gato 0 #10 February 9, 2007 Hey Dave - Would you let a sommelier select a good tequila? T.I.N.S.

JohnMitchell 16 #14 February 9, 2007 I could use a good Beer-melier. Not really, I can pick my own. And when it comes to wine, I have to admit my palate is not that educated. I'm very easy to please.
popsjumper 2 #15 February 9, 2007 I think I met one of those guys back in the '70s. ...at the grocery store, in aisle 7...he recommended Boone's Farm. That Strawberry was kick-ass! Oh, I didn't tip him. He already had a pocket full of change. Just think! You mght get the same guy! My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. micduran 0 #17 February 9, 2007 They spend a lot of time in school and sampling wines. I know the basics of what I like but I would definitely trust one to give some guidance. I do know enough that I would not buy the most expensive bottle just becuase a sommelier told me it wast he best, though.Be patient with the faults of others; they have to be patient with yours. SkydiveStMarys 0 #18 February 9, 2007 To be honest, where you are eating I really don't think he/she will be out to make a buck. They make pretty good money thru out the week. Another thing is...I am sure the cheapest bottle of wine on the list is probably about 50 bucks. BobbiA miracle is not defined by an event. A miracle is defined by gratitude. NWFlyer 2 #22 February 9, 2007 I'd be straight up and say "can you recommend something in [x] price range?" Let him/her know what you're comfortable spending (within the range of what's on the menu of course0. A good sommelier should help you find the best choice within that price range and not push you higher (or at least not much higher)."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please.
