Sambal Manis - who can help ?

Recommended Posts

Hi,
I have a little problem here, actually a pretty urgent one, and could need your help.
I am just preparing some food for a party tomorrow. One of the spices (it's rather a thick sauce or paste) I need to put into the main dish is called "Sambal Manis" in Germany, it's very common, you find it in every grocery store over there. I thought it would be the Asian name. Today I tried to buy it here - nobody had any idea what I was looking for. It's actually from Asia, either China or Indonesia, not sure. Does anybody of you have an idea, how this (or something similar) would be called here in the US? Please let me know asap, maybe I can still find something similar to get some taste into my Asian salad. Thanks a lot,
Barbara

Hi Barbara,

They sell Sambal in pretty much any asian market. I am not sure where you live in Tampa, but I am pretty sure there is a market not far from you that sells it. Just look up asian or oriental market in the phone book.

Hi Oren,
I did, big oriental supermarket - they've never heard of that stuff, that's why I assume it must have a different name here. Well, I guess I need to mix something by myself now, salad needs to get ready...
Thnks,
Barbara

Sambal Manis and Sambal Oelek are similar yet different.

Both Sambals are Indonesian. The easiest way to find it in North America is to find a Dutch store (I know there are several in Florida). Every Dutch store carries the stuff. Indonesian cooking is pretty ingrained in Holland, since it used to be one of our colonies.

Find a Dutch store and you will find both kinds of Sambal.
