At the gym, they should serve punch and cookies or something. :S

It's not just men or women, it's a lot of people.
I know 2 guys who come in for 45 minutes and spend 20-25 of it talking. Not about exercise. Sports, current events, politics.

I have 45-60 minutes to work out. I recently bought some headphones because people talk less if it takes more effort.

I'm not being anti-social, I just have limited time. If they want to chat, we could go eat snacks at Chilis.

I think it is a small town thing. At the bigger gyms in Tampa, people were doing their own thing.

Now that you mention it... they made the suspicious comment to me that tube socks with the colored stripe around the top are out of fashion. Metrosexuals obviously.

Behind the times too. Tube socks are the new liederhosen.

Nothing like that. I thought about living in Zhills, but it is getting overbuilt. I like to stay on the edge of the big city.

Oh yeah, whenever I go with my parents to their small town gym I can count on at least two introductions to their friends "Oh, is this your daughter?" and several social visits before we finally get out of the place. But I'm usually there on vacation and my parents are retired, so it's never much of a big deal. My gym, people say hi and smile, especially those of us who tend to be there at the same times consistently, but we all pretty much do our thing and get out.

All that exercise has made me irresistible. :D
Probably all the heavy breathing.

I am used to the pitfalls of having a lot of time off.
The major one is doing nothing. In the past, I got in a rut and just hung around the house.

So, I make a long list of stuff that needs to be done. Then, I cross one thing off a day. I also schedule the lawn work(Mon), cleaning(Tues), library (Wed), errands, food shopping (Thurs), and the gym (most days).

If I don't keep organized, I can become a total goof off. That is my true talent. :)

Retirees are their own breed. Nothing to do and all day to do it. You can see the wheels turning in their tiny brains... "Elsie's daughter is about his age..."

All the regular social pressure is more subtle. People who stand in your way while you are doing something until finally they say, "Oh, I'm sorry. Was I...?" :S That happens anywhere though. "Was my shopping cart in your way?"

The funny thing is that if you don't fit into the selected program, retirees get pissed. "You aren't volunteering for Cat Juggling Day?" :o
