That's true. My Baba (grandmother) fell and broke her hip about 5 years ago (when she was 89). They told her to walk as much as possible after she got out the hospital. She's my little Bionic-Baba now (titanium hip!). She's 94 now and doing great, except her knee gives out every now and then. She's considering getting that replaced so she can be more mobile. Michele 1 #9 February 12, 2007 My prayers and vibes out to you!! My father broke his hip, as well...and recovered rapidly. He did a lot of walking and moving, getting those muscles strong again...and now, he's back to his normal irrascible self. And that's good! My dad has his replaced about 12 years ago. He's doing pretty good too. I think they're just getting those hips replaced so they can continue to kick our asses! skydiverbry ... vibes to you and your mom. Keep your mom moving around when she gets out of the hospital. It'll make a world of difference! 'Shell

Shell666 0 #12 February 12, 2007 QuoteMy problem was and never will be to keep her moving. It's getting her to rest! Well then, she's on the road to recovery already! That was the problem with my Baba too. I went to see her in the hospital the day before she had surgery. She was sitting up in her wheelchair pointing and flexing her foot on the leg that she had broken. She said she had to keep it moving so she would be in better shape to get gardening when she got out of the hospital. And she was out in the garden a week later! Best wishes to your mom for a SPEEDY recovery!'Shell

wmw999 2,584 #14 February 12, 2007 My dad's 89, but he had a replacement, not a repair. The damage was too bad in his case to do a repair. There are downsides and upsides to each, but in his case the replacement might have been the right thing anyway. He was weight-bearing within a few days. Dad is also in extraordinarily good physical condition, particular for his age. He works out about 20 minutes a day, plus does exercise classes, and walks at least a couple of miles a day normally.
