NWFlyer 2 #1 January 30, 2007 I've been reading the threads, and it's exciting to see so many people committing to getting healthier in the new year. It's been my New Year's resolution, too, to get back to what works for me, and I've already dropped 10 or so pounds, am back to a regular gym routine, and am having to hike up my jeans. I've probably mentioned on here before that a few years ago, I lost 125 lbs. No surgery, no drugs, just pure behavior modification. Some of that has creeped back on because I let old, bad habits sneak back in, but here I am again, back into the good habits. Competition doesn't motivate me, though, so I'm just going to keep quietly working on my own. But anyway ... I've battled with my weight all my life before finally stumbling on what works for me and I thought I'd share some ideas. --Losing weight does not mean starving yourself. Yes, starvation will cause you to lose weight, but it won't be a lot of fun and you won't stick with it for too long. --Eat when you're hungry. Stop when you're satisfied. Not full. Not gut-busted. Listen to your body. It's telling you when to feed it and when to stop. --Don't think of it as a diet, think of it as creating better habits. It's not about depriving yourself, it's about improving yourself. --Eat breakfast. Eat something that satisfies you. For me, it's protein in the morning. I usually have time to make breakfast, but if you don't, have a bunch of hard boiled eggs, or some cheese sticks, or something that you can grab and eat on the way to work or when you get there. Get the small single serve cups of oatmeal (but try to get ones with lower sugar) and make those in the office. But eat SOMETHING. --Minimize sugar and simple carbs. Those are the kinds of foods that send your energy spiking and crashing. They often make you crave more. If you eat things that are more filling and have protein and at least *some* fat, you're going to get hungry less. --Minimize processed food. Yeah, buying a bunch of Lean Cuisine and Healthy Choice stuff makes it sound so easy, but you're going to do a lot better in the long run if you can get into whole foods and unprocessed stuff. Also, if you read the labels on a lot of processed foods, the first or second ingredient is high fructose corn syrup, i.e., sugar. A lot of times when processed food is made lower in fat, it's made higher in sugar. --Be prepared (part 1). The easiest way to sabotage your good work is not to be ready for an unexpected situation. Have protein bars or almonds in your purse/desk/glove compartment. If you get stuck in traffic you'll be less inclined to pull off and grab McDonalds if there's something healthier to munch on that you have with you. If you're in a meeting with a plateful of donuts and croissants, you'll feel better if you have a banana in your desk that you can go grab and eat instead. --Be prepared (part 2). Make sure you have stuff in your house to make simple, healthy meals, so you'll be less inclined to call up the local pizza joint and order a jumbo carnivore special. I keep tons of stuff in my freezer so I can pull something out in the morning. Chicken breast, frozen turkey meatballs, chicken wings (moderation on those!), soups I've prepared in large quantities and frozen, etc., etc. In my fridge I always have a bag or two of salad mix so it's easy to whip up a quick salad. I keep stuff around that I like on salads like goat cheese, and walnuts, so I don't get bored. --Eating out is all about portion control. The vast majority of restaurants serve portions that are way more than one person needs to eat. Share meals with a friend. Or ask for a to-go box and package up half your entree as soon as you get it, then you won't be tempted to just finish it off *and* you'll have yummy leftovers for lunch or dinner the next day. Make meals out of appetizers instead of whole entrees. Skip the filler stuff (the bread, the rice, the beans). --Do something. Even if you hate to work out, do something. Even if you don't feel like it, go to the gym and say "Well, I'll at least do something." Maybe you normally do 30 minutes on the treadmill and tonight you only do 15. So what, you went. Chances are once you get there, you'll do something. --Too busy to do something? Do something anyway. When I get crazy busy in my home office, I still think of ways to keep moving. I'll come up with something I need to check in my laundry room, two floors down. I'll run up and down to the kitchen all day to get water, instead of getting it from my bathroom right next door. --Know what your trigger foods are. Some people can eat small amounts of their favorite foods and be satisfied, others can't. I have learned that there's certain things (ice cream is one) that I just can't do, because I don't eat it in small quantities. I have to just make it completely off limits. But if you can handle small quantities, allow yourself to indulge slightly maybe once a week or once a month. --Measure progress against your own goals. I think the healthy competition of this contest can be a good thing, but remember that the only one you're ultimately competing with is yourself. Everyone's going to come into this with different starting points and end goals. For some it's toning and already slim body, for others, it's losing weight and getting back into shape. --Pay attention to how your clothes feel in addition to what the scale says. Sometimes, that says more about how you're improving your body than the scale will. If you're building muscle, muscle is more dense than fat, so your body may be smaller but not weigh that much less. But you can squeeze into those old jeans, can't you? So that's progress. --Find what works and stick to it, even through weeks and months where things don't move. --SOme people need to weigh themselves daily. But if you do weigh yourself daily, don't put all that much stock in the fluctuations. Always weigh yourself at the same time every day (I like mornings, after I've peed and before I've had anything to eat or drink. I think that is the most consistent time of day for me). Your weight will go up and down throughout the day ... quit obsessing about it. It may go up and down by a pound or two or three from day to day. Focus on the overall trend, not the bouncing around. I'm sure there's others who have ideas, but that's what I've picked up from years of fighting, and finally, finding what works for me. I'll probably think of 10 more things after I post this!"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

I know my eating habits at the DZ tend to be pretty bad, but when I'm focusing on it, I do a lot better because I can pull out a protein bar or almonds from my gear bag instead of going in on the mid-day pizza order. --Booze can be a real issue. Not only does beer have a lot of calories, alcohol can make you say "fuck it" to all your plans and get the munchies at midnight so next thing you know you're chowing down on Moons over My Hammy at Denny's at 2 a.m. Some mixed drinks can be better choices calorie-wise, but a lot of mixers are loaded with sugar and calories. I lost 80 pounds - jeez, over ten years ago - and I reckon I can add what I've learned to keep the weight off (I'm presently 6'1" and 190 - a decent weight): - eat small amounts throughout the day. Grazing is the way to go because it prevents you from gorging. - take your time eating a meal. Ever have a date and can't finish a meal you've finished on your own lots of times? It's because the body is sending you a signal after a while. Take your time, enjoy the food! - keep yourself busy. Nature's own appetite suppressants are endorphins. Do something that requires physical effort or even concentration. I do crossword puzzles or Sudoku to keep my mind occupied. - Don't allow yourself a day per week of enjoyment. Give yourself a little enjoyment each day. Feel the urge for some ice cream? Have a scoop. Not three scoops. A scoop. - Cut down on alcohol. Man, this is a key source of calorie building. The easiest way to do this is to drink after you eat or while you eat. You're already full, and therefore will drink far less. - Have kids. I've got a 2 1/2 year old son. And a 2 month old daughter. See the part about "keeping busy." - Manage your sleep patterns. My wife is hotter than your wife.
 LisaM 0 #7 January 30, 2007 Agreed! lauraliscious 0 #20 January 30, 2007 There is some great info in this thread! Thanks for starting it, Krisanne. As for the water thing, that doesn't seem that out of line to me either. I started drinking water out of a Nalgene bottle (slightly more than 32 oz.) in college. I just keep refilling it throughout the day. I easily go through 3 re-fills a day now, and can definitely tell when I'm dehydrated. I feel better when I'm drinking water. Another good tip is to try not to eat too soon before you go to bed because your metabolism is down when you're sleeping. I try not to eat for at least 2 hours before I sleep. It's definitley tough to do sometimes though. Enemiga Rodriguez, PMS #369, OrFun #25, Team Dirty Sanchez #116, Pelt Head #29, Muff #4091
NWFlyer 2 #21 January 30, 2007 Another I just thought about at lunch... I was eating hot wings and a salad with goat cheese, walnuts, and homemade raspberry vinaigrette. Healthy does not equal boring!!! Think flavor! Balsamic vinegar! Hot sauce! Herbs and spices! Curries! There's lots of ways to make healthy eating more interesting. It's not all dry rice cakes and dressing-free salad."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. So sorry. This is all bullshit anyway. The real secret is to take at least four different diet pills, each of which will take pounds off a different part of your body. Of course, in addition to that, you will need to eat only grapefruit, pop tarts, and jordan almonds."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please.
