enflyt 0 #1 December 5, 2006 Ok.. So... 21 Jumps later, I'm dying for my own gear. And it looks like its finally gonna happen... But now, I'm trying to figure out what to get and where. Problem is every time I ask a fellow skydiver what they think I need/should get... i get a million different answers- Buy new- buy used 7 cell vs 9 cell all the extras vs standard stuff Brands- Anyhow... as you can see.. i'm new, confused, but eager to get my own stuff.. Any personal opinions on what I absolutely have to have, and what I should completely avoid?? Thanks a billion
NWFlyer 2 #2 December 5, 2006 Deep breaths. Start here. The articles by Lisa Briggs are particularly relevant for newer jumpers thinking about gear. Re: used vs. new; it's partly a matter of what you can afford, but even if you can afford new you may be better off starting with used gear (or at least some parts of your gear used) for your first rig till you know what you like and what size canopies you want to stick with for a while. Unless you are unusually tall/short/large/small, you should be able to find plenty of good used gear options out there, once you know what you want. Your instructors would be a good source to start re: canopy size. Canopy size will then inform container size."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
MotherGoose 0 #3 December 5, 2006 HAVE TO HAVE : container, main, reserve,AAD AVOID : posting on here for an opinion if you're tired of getting "A MILLION" different opinions. Go cheap and used, you'll be upgrading in no time. You think you understand the situation, but what you don't understand, is that the situation just changed. skybytch 273 #4 December 5, 2006 You might find this article helpful. What I jump is the best for me; it may or may not be the best for you. The only way to figure that out is to jump a variety of stuff before you buy.

billvon 3,119 #8 December 5, 2006 >Any personal opinions on what I absolutely have to have . . . OK, given I know nothing about you: Silhouette that matches the size canopy you currently jump PD reserve that matches the size of your current MAIN canopy Talon container with the same handle arrangement you have now Cypres AAD If you have lots of money, get all new gear and just sell it when you're ready to downsize. Get every option they have on the rig, from funky fabrics to chest rings to hookknives. If you're over 200 lbs get large rings. If you don't have lots of money get used gear. See? Problem solved.
