There is a theory put forward that an arc-shaped train tunnel through the Earth from one major city to another would allow gravity to do the lion's share of the work, taking advantage of the pendulum effect by descending in the tunnel in a long curve, and only applying power when the other end of the arc is reached.

Making such a tunnel would be insanely expensive and dangerous, but it would cost almost nothing to operate.

Evacuate the air from the tunnel and there would be little or no drag to slow the vehicle down. Incredible speeds could be reached.

All theory, of course.
