A Hole through the earth

Recommended Posts

Most likely you'd do the pendulum effect, freefall back and forth, shorter and shorter until you come to a stop at dead center. Would be one HELL of a ride! :D

it doesnt have to go right through the middle, it can be a hole on the side lol

If the hole wasn't dead center, you'd fall in and eventually land on one side of the tunnel. If the whole was dead center, you'd get suspended in the middle like Billy says. It would have to be one HELL of a dead center hole, though.

Hmm maybe, but would that mean you get shot out the other side like a cannon? :D

No you would stop in the middle... the gravity from both sides is pulling you in towards the center. :D

Jumpers have discussed this before. The closest to the idea I've seen was a plan by some engineers to drill a small tunnel straight down 50,000 feet and drop capsules in which automated micro-gravity experiments could be carried out. Then a company began toying with the idea of scaling it up and selling anti-gravity rides to the public. I remember it because I wrote about it in BASE magazine in 1989 . . .

I was thinking about the giant hole in new mexico that often caters to base jumpers and i was thinking,

IF it were possible to make a hole go through the earth, what would happen once you got to the other side?

would you just keep going?

someday... :D

There's an interesting article on the The Straight Dope here:

http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_165.html

Basically, without any other interferance and in a vacuum, you'll pendulum back and forth forever. Add air resistance and you'll pendulum back and forth but slow down until you settle in the middle.

On a related note, if you're looking to make such a tunnel, you may be interested in the Wiki's map of antipodes (just to see if there's land or water on the exact opposite side of the earth from you):

Didn't the Japanese build a shorter version of that? I thought I had seen it a magazine. Maybe not.:S

Close but the accelleration towards the centre would be suffient to take you to just at the surface of the other side, then gravity would drag you back down again and the process would continue, from what i remember almost perpetually. you would of cource be dead and nothing but a glob but meh.

You'd be learning to eat with chopsticks.
My reality and yours are quite different.
