beginners question: what second hand rig size do I need?

Recommended Posts

Seeing as you are in the Netherlands have you looked t the wingloading guidelines that have been published and are required to be followed there? The 150 might be too small for you to be able to jump it there.

In terms of determining your size one of the easiest ways to determine if a rig fits or not is to get measurements off an order form for your body then call/email the manufactor with those measuerments and the serial number of the rig you wish to purchase. They will be able to tell you if its too big or too small in one direction or another and if it is the wrong size if it would still safely work for you or not.

I have an Odyssey in black white and grey that i'll be looking to sell in february.

It has a spectre 150 in it at the moment but it had a silhouette 170 in to begin with which I still have. (matching colours: blk-blk-sil-wht-wht-wht-sil-blk-blk).

Im 5'11 and 170lb and its just a tad long on me but not too bad.
the harness size is C20 which javelin says is for jumpers who are 6'3.

Most of the manufacturers websites have sizing charts but maybe it would be a good idea to try on some rigs around your DZ to see which harness size feels best on you.

It depends on inseam. Height in inches - inseam - 20 is a reasonable approximation of harness length. 5'10 = 70" - 30.5" - 20" = 19.5". Not coincidentally I have rigs in the 19-20" range.

With under 100 jumps, you should be looking at main and reserve canopies in the 190 square foot range.

Thank you everybody, it was very usefull! As to the size I'm going to buy: I have indeed under 100 jumps but not by far, and will have 100 jumps by the end of this year. I've also done a canopy control course and a Sabre2 150 is what my instructor thought would match my skill at this point.

Still, you cannot have jumped a 150 and you cannot have jumped a sabre2 yet, so it might be smart to try both out before committing to buying a fairly expensive canopy. Unless you are now happily flying a pilot 168 and are confident enough with it to go one size down. You may not even LIKE the speed of a sabre2 150.

Anyway, buying a rig over the internet is tricky. Atoms are easiest as they come in standard sizes but you don't want one (why not?). Have you been to the Parachute Case, Skydive Supplies, Caroline Suits etc yet. You could always buy a rig locally and get the canopie(s) online (a sabre2 is certainly cheaper from the States).
