Refurbished Dell?

Recommended Posts

I bought a Dell PDA, Axim x50v, a couple of years ago for school but have hardly used it -- maybe 3-4 hours total. I want to start using it now, but yesteday the thing wouldn't go on.
Talked to Dell today and long story short, the operating system they sent me isn't compatible with the x50.
So Dell is willing to send me a REFURBISHED Axim x51v to replace my essentially new X50, or send me the older operating system.

The question is, have you ever gotten anything refurbished from Dell?
What kinda quality was it in? Was it scratched to hell?

What do you think?

Thanks

I'm not familiar with either of those units, but based on the model numbers, I'm assuming that the x51v is a later model and probably a better deal if it's not costing you anything,

however,

before you buy anything refurbished, I would do a little homework and see if there's any reason why they have refurbished stock to give you. I bought a refurbished HP laptop a few years ago and starting having problems shortly after I got it. I'd gone overseas with it just after buying it, so the warranty didn't help much (90 days, only valid in North America) and a few minutes research on the net I found that the model that I'd bought was a lemon, which probably explains where the refurbished stock came from. I'm sure that there's plenty of refurbished items out there that are perfectly fine, but do a little googling. It doesn't hurt to be a little more sure of that.

well, consider the ages of the devices. The biggest risk imo is the battery--the battery is the part of it most likely to degrade over time and makes up a big difference in the price of a refurbished vs new device.

IIRC active use of the device generally improves the way the battery ages, to a certain extent. Consider getting the refurb and just buying a new battery if the refurb one doesn't last very long.
My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?

Bought 3 refurb laptops from Dell, me (4 years ago), my mom (2 years ago), and my dad (2 years ago), all three work perfectly and have had no problems. All 3 looked like new and had no scratches or blemishes when I received them. I cant comment on their service/support, never had to call them. I will be buying another laptop in the next 6 months and will, based on my experience, buy another Dell (probably a refurb).

just my experience, I guess others have had different experiences than me...

I bought a laptop from the Dell outlet. It is the inspiron 710m. I havent had any problems with it, and I have had it for the better part of a year. My only complaint was the XPhome that came on the thing. I have upgraded the OS to XPpro and have absolutely no problems with it. I bought gateways prior to this and had some serious hardware issues, but nothing with the Dell.

If you check the Dell Outlet website, you will see exactly what they have out there. A lot of what they sell at the outlet is either scratch and dent, or cancelled orders. They also sell refurbs. Mine is a refurb. Nothing is going to be perfect, but if you can save a few hundred dollars and get an identical item, it might be worth looking.

As far as PDAs. I dont know anything about Dell PDAs, I have a palm.

Any more feedback on refurbished Dells and more specifically their pda's

I don't use pda's so I don't have any feedback on them, I just know their laptops have performed well for me. Ive used mine for all of the standards, video edit, pics, DZ.com... At one point I reformatted my dell (it had a lot of spyware and what-not cluttering it up, from my mis-use) and installed a fresh copy of xp and all new drivers and it has been fine since (im a little more careful now), their website was easy to use for finding all of the drivers for my model. sorry I don't have more for you.
