ACMESkydiver 0 #1 March 2, 2007 I need some info, please!! ...and I know this is really grasping, but does anyone happen to be an Occupational Therapist that works with disabled kids? I need to know what courses you took in college that were WORTHWHILE and helped, and what study materials you used. I am on a mission to become an OT for my kids. The school district just dumped both of them, the fight is going to be long and difficult, and all of the pediatric OT's that work private practice around here have a waiting list 70+ kids long. I want to pay for some college courses for >gasp< education's sake! I'm not the least bit worried about a degree or certification. I need to know how to develop an OT program. I just can't wait for the system to figure things out. These are my babies; screw it...I will do it all myself!! -Good text books/clinical study info?~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. VanillaSkyGirl 6 #8 March 2, 2007 Jaye, it's things like this make it obvious that you're a wonderful mother. Your children are lucky to have you, and I'm sure that you feel the same way about them. Wishing you much luck with this, sweetie.
 sartre 0 #9 March 2, 2007 Hey Jaye- The OT's that I know specialize in geriatrics. However, the therapy world is a small one and I can certainly ask around for some referrals. It sounds like you have some possible leads already, but PM me if you'd like me to do some investigation from this end. WTF happened with the school district? Have you looked into an attorney to fight this? I'm so sorry that you're going through this. PS It occurs to me that my boss may have some sources; she is the mother of a developmentally disabled child and has been active on the special ed. panel in her area. I'll check with her tomorrow. Good luck. Fight the good fight! I thought we were doing ok...but now, not so much. The dumb PT that wrote up a letter to discontinue service sent me a request for re-evaluation of the boys...however, it looks suspiciously like HE will be doing the re-evaluation! Oh THAT will help! ...I called the district today to get sombody else. The secretary gave me the name of the coordinator for OT/PT services for our area of schools, and I just about dropped my teeth...none other, than the woman that was serving as Joey and Derick's OT (again, she is NOT an OT, she is a PT) earlier this year. SHE WAS WORSE THAN HIM. I thought she was gone because she got fired. Apparently, she left because she got promoted. BECOME A WORTHLESS F*CK UP IN THE KENT SCHOOL DISTRICT AND GET PROMOTED. THIS woman, for my sons' therapy, let them swing for a half hour. THAT was her 'therapy'. She called it 'child-directed therapy'. I asked her how in the freak that was going to help my sons learn how to speak...or brush their hair...or zip their jacket...she said it helped them feel better so they would attend in class. RECESS IS NOT YOUR FREAKING JOB, YOU ARE 'SUPPOSED' TO BE A THERAPIST!! "Oh they don't swing ALL the time. Sometimes they like to bounce on the ball," To borrow a phrase from 'Blazing Saddles'; You teutonic twit. I cannot catch a freaking break. I am paying for an independant, outside evaluation as soon as we can get in to see an OT. We are just 71 kids deep on the waiting list, I called today... they will put me on a cancellation list. I called Washington state PAVE. I am waiting for an advocate to call back. I'm so exhausted.~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
 karenmeal 0 #13 March 2, 2007 I would try to contact the UW and see what sort of services they offer. You may get a student clinician, but they should have good supervision and it will cost less. I know that at the speech clinic, they look for unique cases to assess so that the clinicians can gain exposure, you could try to work that angle when trying to arrange an assessment/evaluation. Here is some info I found for OT at the UW: Phone: 206-598-5764 Fax: 206-685-3244 Email: ot@u.washington.edu That should be for the OT program at UW and they should be able to direct your call to the clinic.
