Hondas, and why they piss me off.

Recommended Posts

Ok, so let me begin by saying if you know us, you know that I have the nice car, and Hottie has the P.O.S. She's had her 1994 Honda del Sol since 98, and its got a whopping 227,000 miles on it. Other than once it wouldnt start, a battery, a radaitor, a clutch, and brakes, its been trouble free. It had never left her stranded until Saturday, on the side of the freeway, 3 hours from the DZ I was on on a beautiful sunny Saturday.

So, through a series of phone calls, we get it all sorted out: the wrecker, someone to pick her up, where the car is going, etc.

I get a couple jumps in and finish safety day and haul ass to the house (where we had the car dropped). A couple quick checks and yup, the timing belt had broken.[:/]

Now any of you that know anything about Honda's knows that this is a VERY bad thing. Usually its bends valves and costs major $$$.

Long story short: Ive never done this repair before, and does it suck. I got it all back together about 7:30 last night, and it runs again. Seems like we got lucky and not bent any valves, but while I was playing monkey boy under the car I found multiple things wrong that must be fixed. Ugh.

Why is it that my hand is always a little too big for where I need to put that bolt back in? Why is it I have to bend wrenches to get at that bolt? Why is it you have to all but remove the freakin engine to put a timing belt and a water pump on this freakin car?
!!Explative here!!

Ok, now carry on. :)

well..in my opinion honda motors are the easiest to repair. And...im hoping that the timing belt wasnt to orginal timing belt..if so...you got REAL lucky that it didnt break sooner. If its a genuine honda belt it should only last 80,000-90,000 miles. And a timing belt breaking doesnt always casue internal motor problem. I had mine break on the way home from work(i had a 93 prelude at the time). I lived about 8 minutes from where i worked..and it broke halfway home. Well..the car finally died right in front of my house.....traced it down to the timing belt....i changed it out..and it ran fine. Its a 50/50 chance that it will cause damage..luck of the draw pretty much. Im not going to say im an expert mechanic but i know about about the B, D, H, and K series motors..which...if its the original motor and hasnt been swapped out..is the D16 motor which is single overhead cam non vtec. IF you need help with anything let me know. If for some reason i dont know the answer my boy mike has been building honda motors for 10 years now...he will know. These are some pics of my lude before i let a friend borrow it and got back the pieces after he totaled it!

Oh yeah..the whole hand being bigger than the spot you need to get to...yeah..i have the same damn problem too....thats when you learn to make tools do things they really shouldnt be able to do...and most of the time you dont use the proper tool for the nessessary job...

Yep. That is a Honda. Try getting that kind of mileage out of a GM or Ford without major repairs.:S

the only honda i have owned was a 3 door 1980 civic that cost me NZ$50 about US$30.

I used it for a ski field access road vehicle and it drove on ice and up washed out tracks. there wasn't anything I could throw at it that it couldn't handle. the only reason it ever stopped when i didn't want it to was when it ran out of gas:$

Honda bodies are pieces of shit that always rust out along the joins though. the motors are wonderful and outlive the body's most of the time, if they are serviced that is!!!!!

a timing belt should be replaced when it is specified.

Nope, not the original belt. This is the 3 one thats been put on counting the original.
Oh, and youre close on the engine, but off slighly.
It is a Vtec, SOHC 16 valve, but not the DOHC B16.

I've been letting her keep up with her own maintenance, which, up till now has been great.
Come to find out during all this the car needed or still needs: spark plugs, water pump, valve cover gasket, distributor cap/ rotor, plug wires, O2 sensor, BOTH axle shafts (one boot broken, others leaking), exhaust manifold gasket, and a partridge in a pear tree. [:/]

That didnt count the tools I had to buy, I used to have everything I needed, but they all got stolen, and I've only been replacing things as I needed them. Well yesterday I needed about $150 worth of tools, and about 300 worth in parts. Im off to the store again today to pick up the 02 sensor and the plug wires.

Oh, and I'd take my 1994 VR4 Mitsubishi Galant over this thing ANY day! ;) Much more room, but again, tight spaces.

I had a 93 prelude and had the timing belt break on it while coming back from class. It made this horendous(sp) noice and quit working right in the middle of the road. It had never broke down so I was defiantly concerned. Bent Valves and cost a bucket of money to fix. But still my favorite car ever.:S:)

It's because the people who design the things never have to work on them. Ever wonder what a car would look like if it was designed by the mechanics who would eventually have to fix it? It would probably resemble a '57 Chevy. Front engine, rear drive, simple, lots of room for big guys to turn wrenches. :)

Get the 07 sensor, it's newer:)

Yea, Im glad I can do that stuff. My dad flipped out the first time he came home from work and had the tranny on my 79 Malibu torn apart in the driveway. He said it would never be right again. Guess I didnt get the mechanic gene from him! :D One of my neighbors was over watching me slap everything back together and asked how I leared all that stuff, and where I found the parts.

Its like this though: I used to turn wrenches for work on heavy and construction equipment. I used to do it for fun on my personal cars, my buddies cars, and my race cars. Im tired of it, I feel like I was hit by a truck leaning over that damn thing all day, and i dont have any skin left on my knuckles. I'd normally rejoice at the fact that I saved $$, but I didnt have the money to fix what I did, much less pay someone to do it. [:/]

I think I'll just up the price of the SDA tent to 30 bucks a person! :D:P

Other than my Miata's I only drive Honda's. I've had Preludes (2) Accords(3) Pilots(1) and have had over 200,00 on all of them except Pilot which is relatively new. Same story with family members.
I wouldn't complain too much- that car doesn't owe you anything. I drive american POS rental cars with 5,000 miles that don't drive as well as a Honda with 200,000. Sad but true.

Not always. I had a '93 Ford Mustang hatchback that lasted 298K miles with no major part replacements. Of course, it helped that 95% of those miles were highway miles.

Hey now, My 2001 Chevrolet 2500HD truck with the Vortec 8100 has just over 205,000 with no major troubles at all. The only repairs I can think of are an a/c compressor, a cam shaft sensor and a crankshaft sensor. Other than oil changes and general maintenance stuff, this is the only stuff that has ever been done to the truck.

Seriously I wish i could do that stuff myself, But its a little intimidating, I feel as though I could save myself a boat load of money if i coould figure out how to do my brakes. They apparently cost a ton due to the time involved in them, but parts are cheap. But i love my car so i guess its the price you pay.

They cost a ton to have done at a shop bacause youre gettin it in the bunghole.

Brakes are a joke. Seriously, if you change the pads in a timely manner, and there is no warping (evident by a shaking when you press the brakes) you can just slap a new set of pads on. Or you might have to have the rotors turned. Some newer vehicles have "throw" away rotors meaning that the thickness is only good for one or two turnings, maybe less, and you have to get new ones. That can be expensive.

Fair enough, I need to look into doing them, cuz its insane how much they cost to get done. where would one go about getting a manual to learn such things? BTW post 1000.

Hippie, I am quite envious of you heading to dublin tomorrow night.

Any auto parts store can sell you a manual depending on your car. Eg. Autozone, Oreillys, Advance Autoparts, Pepboys, etc.

If I was real nice I might could help you your first time through. But Im not known for being nice.

Wow!! Are you in Luck!!

It just so happens that I have an RV sitting at the Dublin Airport that will have to have a Brake Job before I drive it home (Rear Brakes Got Nothin at the moment).

Bring some Clothes you dont mind getting dirty and I will gladly show everything you ever wanted to know about a brake system and let you get all the First hand experience you want.
