JohnRich 4 #1 March 12, 2007 Does anyone know of a web site that has online topo maps for the U.S. with UTM coordinate grid marks shown? I can find aerial photos and topo maps, but not with UTM grids. I'm planning a canoe trip, and want the UTM grid so that I can verify my position with GPS. I'll settle for lattitude & longitude if necessary...

Chances are, you're probably not going to find what you want for free but if you use topos a lot some of the online subscription sites offer downloads for decent prices(trail.com or topozone.com/charttiff.com). Do your maps have no grid reference lines at all on the outside of the map? What I think your asking for is more in line with a MGRS map and I am assuming you want a scale of 1:50K? Check out this LINKdescribing how to do what you are asking for as well as the MAIN page for other gee-wiz information. Then again, you can always go direct to the source at USGS"It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
JohnRich 4 #5 March 13, 2007 QuoteHave you tried http://www.topozone.com/? Well, they don't seem to add grid lines... But by clicking your cursor on the map, it adds a reference point with the UTM of that point. So I can at least get some waypoints of geographic features for reference. That's something. But there's no way to measure from that point, to interpolate to other places on the map... At least I would know from pre-saved waypoints, and from the easting and northing readings of my current position, somewhat roughly where I'm at. And from capturing multiple waypoints I can get an idea of the scale... It would be a lot simpler if they would just give me the standard 1,000-meter grid squares! I'll poke around here some more. I've been using Terraserver, and which is a bit lacking in this regard. And there used to be a site called Topowest, which now has been put to use by some completely unrelated company. I've used the USGS site to order the paper maps for my backpack while hiking, but that site is a muther to navigate. Thanks!
JohnRich 4 #6 March 13, 2007 QuoteDo your maps have no grid reference lines at all on the outside of the map? I don't have the paper maps for this area, so I'm trying to get it online and print some off for my weekend canoe trip. It's not a real big deal, because this is not remote wilderness, and I'll be able to figure out where I'm at just by following the compass heading of the bends in the river. But I like to have some GPS stuff just in case. Sometimes erosion makes new bends in the river that aren't shown on the old topo maps, and then you get confused... QuoteWhat I think your asking for is more in line with a MGRS map and I am assuming you want a scale of 1:50K? I usually use the USGS maps, 1:24k scale - they have the best detail. I'll check that out tomorrow - gotta run right now. I appreciate the help.
