Pan's Labyrinth

??? are you reffering to the post i deleted where I was trying to figure out what the name of this movie was???

Like I said, I was at another movie, and saw the previews for this one and it looks good. I was wondering if anyone else had thoughts about it. There are lots of harry potter lovers and this movie, imo, is the same genre.

I would however, love to get paid for watching movies.

Finally saw this movie last night. What an amazing film and I am shocked at how it was ignored at the Oscar's.....this was easily the best movie I've seen in the last year. I can't wait for the DvD this May so I can watch it a few more times.

More Info on it

Excellent film. I liked that they stuck to the way the original (old)fairy tales used to be told. The violence in the film is brutal to say the least but it is true to form in the way most fairy tales used to be told along with the dual, less obvious message being told either metaphorically in words or visually. I did not know that it was all in Spanish when I went to it so I was a bit surprised. While the subtitles were good, I still found myself the only one chuckling at a few pieces of the Spanish dialogue that was used in certain parts. Likewise, being able to understand Spanish, I thought certain scenes had a bit more power than the subtitles could convey. I think if the viewer has a decent grasp on Spanish, the movie is just that much better than if you were to go only by the subtitles.

The cinematography and setting is very refreshing as well, not your typical Holywood crap that seems overly prevalent this season. I think people either like or dislike the differences a foreign director brings to the way a movie is made and it no doubt will be true to this movie. I think it was missed by the Oscars due to the fact that this film doesn't fit the mold all the movies out of Hollywood seem to fit in these days. There are a lot of subtext messages and images in this film that cover a gamut of social topics. If you're astute to it, it can be one of those movies you leave the theatre thinking about and later having conversations about with friends over coffee. And if you're not, it'll be just another Fairy tale, albeit very violent, told in a different language with excellent special effects, like watching Harry Potter with a dash of Scarface in a language other than English.

I'll buy a copy of it on DVD when it comes out just for the extra stuff alone that comes on most DVDs, the film itself is good IMO but it is one people will either like or dislike, no middle ground.

that was kind of the point.
Oh, and just FYI, on the poster the tree the girl is walking towards is a representation of a vagina (the filmmakers admitted this in an interview). Makes sense in context of the film...
