About to get my ass kicked on a track in Singapore...

Recommended Posts

Sitting in the stands, waiting my turn to run a 5000m (5k) race in some province about 40 minutes outside of downtown singapore. I'm definitely the oldest runner here by a long shot. Most of them look high school.

Its an allcomers meet, which means anyone can run. Or, in my case, realy good runners can run, and then, I can, too.

But the race fee was about $3.00 US. How could I not enter it?

This is all Google's fault for showing this as a result when I typed in "race run singapore" last week.

I'm so gonna come in last. Oh well. My race is the last race of the day. Perhaps all the spectators will have gone home.

Oh, and its 97 degrees farenheit here. And the track is outdoors. It was cloudy all day. Now the sun is out and beating down. Who does this to themselves?

Lovely.

And??! How did it go? Doesn't really matter. Kudos for just doing it in the first place.

I was just posting how it went. Nutshell? "Ugh."

I ran 24:29 - or 7:53's. It was 94 degrees at the start of the race. In an outdoor stadium.

Had I run in NYC that time in a 5k, I would have finished somewhere in the 55th or so percentile, with 55% of the people coming in after me.

Sadly, this was Singapore. Where the entire race was made up of 15 people. 13 of whom were a shitload faster than me.

The winner ran something like 6 minute miles.

I, needless to say, did not.

But I didn't finish last. 13 of the people ran competitively. I was the oldest runner in that race (at a dinosaurific 34,) sans 1 other person who was like, three days older than me, or something.

Being the last meet of the day, I was actually worried that if I WAS last, they'd turn off the lights and leave the stadium before I finished.

7:53's... Eh. I'm not too thrilled with that. I know I can be faster. 20 pounds less, and I'd be running 7:15's. It's basic physics.

Feh.

LOL! Well, I don't run ANYWHERE and certainly not when the temps are in the 90s. If I had tried that, they would've had me on oxygen at the end of the first turn. I think it's great that you did it at all. Forget the numbers.
