Good News/Bad News

Recommended Posts

Why is it that every time something good happens something bad comes along to knock you back down?
I just got promoted to paramedeic field supervisor at work and then a couple of days later I get a call
from my mom telling me that my uncle is in the hospital. Says he went into v-fib twice and was brought back.
Then while I'm at work yesterday, I get a call from her saying that me is being moved to a hospice hospital because
right now his liver function is less than 10% and he has a bilirubin level of 25-28. Way above normal.
So now I have a high from getting a promotion but knocked down because my uncle will be dead in the next few days.
One of his lsat wishes is to be cremated and have his ashes spread from the top of Pikes Peak. I may try to talk my mom
into letting me take part of the ashes and do a ash dive with them. When you work in EMS you think you get used to death
and dying but right now this is very hard to deal with. I have stared at death and dared him to take pts that I have had but
now there is nothing I can do.
So now I sit here and drink a little and toast to his life and wait for the inevitable phone call to come.

Jeez man, that sucks. Not sure what can be said about this situation that wouldn't seem cliche, but I'll go for it anyway. The best way to honor your uncle is to grant him his dying wishes, and do the honorable job of saving people with everything you have. Saving others doesn't change the fact that everyone dies eventually, but the fact that you can save some from dying too soon will make things easier.

know the feeling...
I went home for Xmas and saw my uncle too. He was taken off interferon 10 months ago and his cancer immediately metastasized. We got to speak and hang out but he's now in hospice and on morphine all I get to hold on to is, he knows he had a good life, and that we all love him.
Every time I see an east coast area code in the caller id window my heart stops...

I had a somewhat similar experience back in '02. I had my AFF plans scheduled for several months down in Florida. I put 16 days aside for it. The second day I was down there, I received a phone call that my uncle had a massive heart attack and he didn't have much time left. His heart was working at only 5%. I immediately flew home and he passed away 4 days later. I was on such a high and immediately such a low. In hindsight I know I did what I had to do. The 2 things were not related, they just happened to correspond with eachother. That's life.

Like was said before, honor your uncle's wishes and at the same time be proud of your accomplishments and the fact that you can save some lives.

My prayers are with you and your uncle.

Chris

I've been there too.Shortly after I got married my mom called and told me my grandmother had lung cancer. Then for a year we watched her fight and take treatment after treatment. She just kept going down hill and it spread to her brain so she finally went on home health hospice. We all sat for a year waiting for that phone call. It came shortly after my first wedding anniversary.:(

Well I knew the call was coming anyday now. It came around 5pm. My uncle has now moved on.
my mom told me that he went with a smile on his face and went peacfully.
so now we have to make the arrangemments for him and I'm trying to arrange to make a ash dive with him.
He will be missed.

Sorry for your loss

We'll see them on the other side.

I'm still waiting for the call...
