ipod questions

Recommended Posts

If I remember correctly, from my brief glance at the instruction manual, music can't be transferred from ipod to computer, only from computer (itunes) to ipod. That is one of the complaints of buying ipods on Ebay. (May be a different story though if you bought a refurbished one through an apple store).

But I'm sure someone around here has found a way around this problem. ;)

if you go onto the apple website, I think they have directions on there about clearing the memory and reseting the IPOD. I too got a refurbished IPOD on ebay and had to go through the hooplah. Just get what you need off of their site (downloads, FAQ, etc)-- thats what I did and mine works great. :)
Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

I've been out of touch with improvements to technology lately, but as of a couple years ago there was no way to do this.

Someone sure could make a few bills creating a program that would allow it though!
Killing threads since 2004.

**ahem** well, now that you mention it...

DON'T WIPE OUT ALL THAT MUSIC!
I almost posted this thread after my laptop and HD got stolen, and I was left with a few thousand songs stuck on an IPod.
But it's yet another question which should have been directed to Google.com first:

http://macs.about.com/od/ipod/a/copy_from_ipod.htm?terms=transferring+music+from+ipod+to+computer

As it happens, there are several programs out there designed to just this thing. I've heard good things about CopyPod, but XPlay will dump the stuff out in convenient windows folders (complete with cute little graphics!) so you can click and drag it right onto your PC into any category you want. AND it comes in a really shiny TRIAL version that's FREE for 3 or 4 weeks.

I'll tell you how I know all this when Apple tells me why they don't want us doing it.

There is lots of shareware and freeware that will allow you to get the music off your iPod onto your hard drive. Do a search for ipod on versiontracker.com and I am sure you will find lots of options.

iTunes won't do what you want.

Then when you're done extracting it, install RockBox (replacement OS) on your 'pod, copy it all back without DRM annoyance, and voila! No more iTunes. Enjoy! B|

Thank you, thank you. I gave up my zen for this piece of shit, but it came with 12,000 songs that would take me forever to try to replace. I will check out XPlay.

edit: Here's another question: after I use XPlay to transfer the music off the ipod, will those songs be accessible with itunes to use as normal, or will I have a bunch of stuff on itunes and a bunch of stuff elsewhere?

The program is designed as a total substitute for ITunes. So, like a good college girlfriend, it goes both ways. :o:$

You can go directly back and forth from IPod to PC on it, or you can click and drag the files from your PC straight into ITunes like normal. I never even used XPlay to go back to the IPod, because I didn't want to get used to it (only having a 3 week free trial and all).
AND they don't throw you Pop-Ups asking for "Donations" or any of that crap.

while in iTunes pull down the "File" menu and use "add folder to my library" it will give you a list of folders to add from your comp including you my documents/my music folder.Voila! all your My Music will be available to be added to your iTunes Library.

Good luck with the rest.:)

Thanks again to the 'Search' option here on dz.com. I had to use my backup HD (external) to re-install my iTune's Library to my brand new HD (old one quite after 5 years of service). Your advice worked alot better than iTune's Help menu. Thanks a bunch! Didn't lose a thing. :^)

Someone here in Norway got a refurbished Creative player, and the technician had forgotten to take the hardcore porn off it. It plays videos on it's little display.

They got quite offended, and the case ended up in the media.

But I mean, that small display, no point in playing big, epic movies on it. It's meant for more useful stuff!

:P
