BlindBrick 0 #1 October 21, 2006 I was asked to repack a reserve and I found that the left reserve risers have been chewed up pretty good by the RSL velcro. The pics I've included aren't the best, so let me say that the damage is to the point that there is no longer any black webbing to the outside of the colored thread on one side of the riser. Also catching my attention is the dimpling in the riser. I've seen RSL velcro damage before, but never the dimpling. This repack comes from a terminal reserve ride. I'm wondering if the dimpling is a result of the webbing taking the shock load unevenly due to the damage to the weave? A sort of partial failure? My gut instinct is that this is more than cosmetic and the rig should be tagged as unairworthy, but I'd appreciate the opinions of riggers with more experience. -Blind [edited to put up pic instead of just links to them]"If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it." Samurai136 0 #2 October 21, 2006 It appears that the selvedge edge stiching is in tact. http://www.sunpath.com/downloads/manuals/AppendixA.pdf Sunpath describes this as grade 2 damage. QuoteGrade 2 Minor Hook and Loop type abrasion. Minor wear due to normal use. Replacement optional, make note to inspect specific area on every repack cycle."Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken
Squeak 17 #3 October 21, 2006 Someone else posted a similar issue some time back. If I recall correctly they sent the rig bag to the Mfgr, and they fixed the problem. You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! councilman24 37 #8 October 21, 2006 Althought the photos are out of focus, it looks like more that sunpath's grade 2. The yellow thread is not the selvedge, the black outside is. Any damage to the selvedge is much more serious than damage to the field of the webbing and results in greater loss of strength. I would NOT put this in the air as is, although I know riggers that would. Sunpath's site lists costs for replacement of half or all the harness.I'm old for my age.
