turtlespeed 226 #26 March 28, 2007 A really good Shove usually knocks them over - not as hard as when you go Cow Tipping, but a good hardy shove at shoulder height works.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun

LyraM45 0 #30 March 28, 2007 I run a college club and when we have 15-20 that have signed up for a tandem trip, I've seen 3-5 show up. We have thought about taking 15% downpayments for the jump, and if you don't show up, then you're shit out of luck. As for tipping, I've been around the DZ for a few years and know how hard the TM's work (and not to mention I'm a waitress, so I appreciate the concept of tipping), so I always get the group together before they jump and let them know that it is not required, but if you feel you had an awesome time and want to give your TM a tip, then go on with your bad self. I don't think it's right for a DZ to require tipping, but they can suggest it when the student is filling out paper work and such. Honestly, I didn't tip my tandem instructor on my first becuase I didn't know any better. Had somebody mentioned it to me, I would have done it.Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)
pfloyd 0 #31 March 28, 2007 When my wife and I did our tandem jumps I gave a $20 bill to each instructor because we had fun, and did it safely. I think they do deserve gratitude for doing the work that they do! My drinking team has a skydiving problem
JumpinJules 0 #32 March 28, 2007 Okay... I'm trying to reply to this all here... lets see, first off and most importantly, I have never tipped a cow, even though I do live in wisconsin.... smartasses! Secondly... it was one of the manifests who told us that we should tip... they didn't add it on or anything, but they told us something to the effect of "it is expected to tip your tandem instructor a $25 tip" and then looked at us like, "that better be okay with you" Also, I'm a waitress too, so I completely understand that, and my TI was awesome, so I tipped accordingly. However, I was a little annoyed with the fact that we were basically "expected" to tip. I'm thinking I will bring some beer along when our group goes... that could never be wrong it sounds like Again, thanks so much for your input everyone !!Into the great wide open/ under them skies of blue/ out in the great wide open/ a rebel w/out a clue..... pds 0 #33 March 28, 2007 whenever i bring noob in i suggest 10 each for the TI and video guy as a nice gesture. but the bottom line is that they are not waitresses, they don't live on tips. do or don't tip as you please. and $25?!! thats a jump ticket AND a beer. wasted on a meat hauler? namaste, motherfucker. JumpinJules 0 #34 March 28, 2007 you're right... but I didn't want to offend my TI by not tipping him, if he usually gets tips.... also... if you think $25 is outrageous.... my friend charged her jumps on her daddy's credit card and gave her TI a $50 tip..... each time! (we jumped a total of 4 times) add that up and tell me it's not crazy Into the great wide open/ under them skies of blue/ out in the great wide open/ a rebel w/out a clue..... Icon134 0 #35 March 28, 2007 I have to agree with what a lot of others are saying... the TI's or camera Flyers don't generally seem to expect a tip... They are getting paid to jump out of an airplane which is something most of them decided to start doing for fun in the first place. but that's just my 2 cents... and I'm just a future videographer...Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... headoverheels 334 #36 March 28, 2007 QuoteMy hubby is a TM and has been for years... at the DZ he is at now, they have a sign up that says tipping is not expected but really appreciated. On a regular basis he gets $10 to $20 dollars. I think it should be a case by case basis, if you had a great time and your TM really worked his arse off for you then give him or her a deserving tip. Not speaking first hand, but being a TM is a hard job and the guys & (girls) really appreciate anything your willing to throw their way as an extra thanks! What does your hubby get from the DZ for each tandem?
wildfan75 1 #37 March 29, 2007 QuoteIf you get 10 people together to do tandem jumps, you should get a discount, not being forced to tip, IMHO. Jules will be coming to our dz for those tandems and you can be sure that if 10 show up, they will be getting a discount. The only time our tandem instructors have been tipped in the last 1 1/2 is when my aunt and I did our tandems and the lady that puked on Marty. Better than a tip, bring a case or two of beer. That will go over FAR better than any tip! Better yet, come out on Friday night, hang with us (you can stay at the dz for free--floor space at the least, or camp out--plenty of space for that), and enjoy the time. All too often we get tandem passengers that show up 5 minutes before their appointment and are our the door as soon as the harness is off. We would far rather have you guys hang out, enjoy everything about this sport and have a great experience than for you to think you need to dish out more than what's listed. Edited to add: We are a non-profit club dz so tipping might be expected at some dz's where TI's and instructors are making their living. None of our skydivers are making their living off skydiving (not even the dzo's).

billeisele 130 #39 March 29, 2007 Jules - we do not expect tips, I'll take one from someone that has the bucks but have often graciously refused a tip from college students- I really appreciate it but it is not necessary, I'm just glad you had a great time - come back and see us. we have college weekends - like this weekend we have 110 scheduled - they get a discount one difference might be that no one at our DZ does it for a living www.skydivecarolina.comGive one city to the thugs so they can all live together. I just wish I could jump yesterday already!!! A couple of other people commented on the fact that DZ's that are clubs are different because the instructors aren't making a living off of it. That does make a lot of sense, and will probably give me an idea of the type of DZ I'll want to call home once I finish my AFF training. In any event, I think I've decided on bringing a couple cases of for my tip when our group goes in May and letting the rest of the people decide on their own about tipping. Mickochet 0 #41 March 29, 2007 I am a tandem instructor and I would like to say that I don't expect a tip but I do appreciate a tip. It doesn't matter how much the tip is it is more important to me that the tandem passenger has had fun and would like to come back and jump again whether it is another tandem or a solo on their way to getting a license. If you never fall down you aren't trying hard enough.
