I was saying that calculating taxes for small business owners is tedious and I'd like to get to bed before the damn sun comes up.~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. pinkfairy 0 #4 April 2, 2007 Well, think of all the good things about paying taxes, then. Calculating taxes for small businesses are hard work over here too. There are rules and laws and regulations, and then the politicians make more rules, and additional rules and so on, until it becomes really hard. It's like a computer operating system. With each upgrade comes new features until you have no clue about navigating it. So I can understand you, and I would like to send you a long distance hug. The GOOD news is going through all of this garbage protects my spending power; I will keep more money in my pocket than if I did not own a business. My sons are still awake...they are sick and haven't slept at all last night, either. I guess we'll all be napping tomorrow. livendive 8 #6 April 2, 2007 I spent about 12 hours on mine last weekend, then a few hours in the evenings doing research, then gave up. I've been doing my own Schedule C for the last 8 years without much problem, but today I'll be calling and making an appointment with an accountant. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" If it takes that long and requires that much research, the chances that you, Acme, or anyone is making mistakes is pretty good. Small businesses are now on the IRS hit list and will make you over 3 times more likely to be audited.

To be fair, a lot of that initial time was just tracking down and compiling expenses, income, and mileage for the year. The big problem came when I tried to include a travel trailer I use at the DZ (a legitimate business expense...it's that or a hotel room two nights/week). I couldn't figure out whether to call it an asset or a vehicle, though I'm leaning towards the former. Still, asset type and corresponding depreciation schedule were killing me. Plus, my 179 deductions weren't working too well for me this year either, and I'd like to convert some of them to "miscellaneous/general expenses" or something along those lines. At this point, a professional seems like my best bet for my 2005 taxes, and I'll absolutely need one for my 2006 taxes, so this gives them a chance to make suggestions up-front to make next year easier. This is another item that will make your return "high profile". And for the love of god - do not take depreciation on your home office.

Blues, Dave The trailer is an asset, but it will be subject to a percentage of business use. If you haven't filed '05 yet you are going to be staring down some nice penalties and interest (assuming you owe and aren't letting the gov't keep your money). I'd need more info to comment on the rest. Good luck.
PhreeZone 20 #13 April 2, 2007 Considering the nearest work office for me is 350 or 600 miles and I'm the regional rep for the area, I hope that I qualify. I ran it through every calculator and website I could find and they all said yes. Yeah, I figured out the depreciation thing last year when I was doing my taxes, this year sucked since the house had a lot of work done to it but only little was done to the office so I had to get my reciepts in order to figure out what was actually an expence. Same with the utility bills. Its a nice tax break, but they sure make you earn it.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
JohnnyD 0 #14 April 2, 2007 Quote Yeah, I figured out the depreciation thing last year when I was doing my taxes, .... The problem with this is that most people don't realize that the depreciation expense you take on your home office will be recaptured when you sell your house. That means you will have a taxable event even if you fall under the capital gain exclusion.

Vskydiver has a home business that takes up 14% of our floor space, so 14% of our utilities and taxes are deductible, but our accountant told us to stay out of the depreciation trap. However, my new rig, new AAD and mileage to the DZ . . . all deductible since I work as a contract instructor. God bless my accountant. Jaye, sweetie, just hire someone to do your taxes. I was driving myself crazy for years doing my own taxes. Hiring an accountant saved me measurable amounts of money and immeasurable amounts of lost sleep. Yeah next year I am paying the $300 and just mailing the whole sha-meer to the pros in Spokane. If I ever do get audited, I always take LESS than I am entitled to. So if the IRS wants to open it up, they'll be paying me more. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.

wmw999 2,600 #22 April 3, 2007 I was ready; a little late due to vacation, but all the paperwork was in place, and my son came over last night to do his taxes (he's learning) and then print them off. the printer just died. The same printer that very successfully printed about 10 pages not 2 hours earlier is crapping out more and more. Aligning the heads, cleaning hte heads -- nothing works. I don't have a PDF printer set up, and it tells me the device isn't ready to print to a text file (I haven't done it here before, so obviously I haven't messed with it). So shit. I might just end up ponying up to e-file. I hate that shit. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it.
